“The Only Good Rock Star is a Dead Rock Star" from Marco Perego

20 Nov 2008 19:55:44 | katie@juxtapoz.com

Italian artist Marco Perego unveiled his sculpture Friday, November 14, of William Burroughs murdering singer Amy Winehouse entitled, The Only Good Rock Star is a Dead Rock Star. Woah.
The sculpture is up for a mere $100,000 (pennies), but the exhibit also includes a series of drawings (some studies, some indirectly related) further exploring the link between sex and violence, borrowing from childhood memories of chivalry, innocence, and romance.

"Sol Negro" New Book & Exhibit from Diva

20 Nov 2008 18:25:35 | katie@juxtapoz.com

Barcelona based artist Diva has a new show Sol Negro, and book of the same title, coming out soon. For Diva the corporal state is a narrative in itself and the artist offers us delicate and complex digital images, incorporating visual effects typical of something pictorial. By combining the mystical strangeness of her landscapes with the elegance and sensuality of her ghostly creatures, Diva puts forth new, dreamlike, metaphysical visions, from other natures in possible parallel worlds.
The book Sol Negro, edited by Rojo, is a limited edition of only 500 copies. Essentially visual and conceived as a work of art in and of itself, Sol Negro is an open door to the various routes and mediums she has used as her work has progressed: the street, galleries, public and interior spaces suitable for stenciling, painting, digital imagery, collage, installations and multimedia. Sol Negro offers its reader a journey inside the world of Diva, where constant change and experimentation with processes have reformulated and reaffirmed the artist’s persevering ideographs and aesthetics.
Sol Negro opens December 9, 2008 at Rojo in Barcelona. More on Diva’s Sol Negro online here.

"This is China" Explores Chinese Graffiti

20 Nov 2008 18:12:02 | katie@juxtapoz.com

This is China is a group exhibition featuring China’s most exciting and cutting edge urban and graffiti artists, presented by Red Star Press at BLVD in Seattle. This is China is an exploration of key issues affecting China’s economy, environment, and culture through the eyes of the people. The exhibit will showcase new artwork by 0528, Steel Dan, Soos, Cui Nan, Ha Shiyou, Zhang Qitian, Popil, Shen Jingdong, and Yang Jun.
Graffiti is considered a serious crime in China, and violators incur harsh penalties from the government. Ironically, the Chinese government recently commissioned a number of public graffiti pieces during the 2008 Olympics to portray positive messages about China and the Olympic games. Local graffiti artists were outraged that their art form was used as a government propaganda tool and wanted to do something about it. This is China is a showcase of graffiti and urban art by Chinese artists without the influence of the Chinese government.
The show will also feature special collaboration pieces between Chinese and non-Chinese urban and graffiti artists. Confirmed artists include Presto (Brazil), Pure Evil (UK), Josh Keyes (USA), Bast (USA), and SPQR (UK.) UK Based graffiti artist Pure Evil is no stranger to the Chinese graffiti art scene as he held a solo show in Beijing in 2007. Pure Evil recently stated, 'I visited Beijing in November and I was blown away…it completely surpassed all expectations I had. China is at a tipping point now, and it’s a fascinating place to be…the art reflects this paradigm shift.' Pure Evil will be collaborating with Chinese artist, Zhang Qitian, to produce a piece that addresses China’s economy.
The exhibit will run from December 12, 2008 through December 20, 2009. Details at redstarpress.com

Nos Cambiamos de Domicilio at Kurimanzutto in Mexico City

20 Nov 2008 17:29:52 | katie@juxtapoz.com

After nine years of the opening of Economia de Mercado/Market Economy (an event that lasted one day and joined the group of artists with which the gallery started for the first time,) Kurimanzutto in Mexico City has a new project in a new space: a twenty-two voice dialogue in a unique new exhibition Nos Cambiamos de Domicilio.
The new space opens Saturday, November 29th in an old timber yard, built in 1949 in Mexico City, and restored by Mexican architect Alberto Kalach.
The members of Kurimanzutto describe the new show in stating: “For this exhibition we have decided to evoke the testimony of an incidental – yet fundamental – protagonist: the bookshelf living in almost any artist’s studio. […] Around thirty industrial shelves have been disposed throughout the main plant of the gallery, conforming a grid over which an organized cosmos might unfold.”
The show will run December 2, 2008 – February 15, 2009. Learn more at kurimanzutto.com
