Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area is pleased to announce the expansion of its College of Health Sciences. Bachelor of Science in Medical TechnologyThe Bachelor of Science (BS) in Medical Technology degree program is designed for individuals who have completed an associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology and are seeking to become medical technologists. Medical Technologists perform the more complex laboratory testing in the clinical lab which requires a higher level of judgment and expertise than that of a Medical Laboratory Technician. Medical Technologists write and implement new procedures, evaluate test results, establish and monitor programs to ensure the accuracy of laboratory testing. Associate in Science in Medical Laboratory TechnologyThe Associate in Science (AS) in Medical Laboratory Technology degree program prepares graduates to play a critical role in the diagnosis of illness and the fight against disease. In this associate of science program students learn to perform testing in the areas of chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology. The modern medical laboratory is a technologically advanced working environment that offers entry-level career opportunities for medical laboratory technicians.
Associate in Applied Science in HistotechnologyThe Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Histotechnology degree program is designed to teach students to work as healthcare professionals, to interact with other healthcare professionals and patients in a professional and ethical manner, to develop the best possible technical skills in histology, and to demonstrate at all times the utmost respect and concern for the well-being of the patients they serve. Argosy University, Sarasota Chair of the College of Education, Dr. George Spagnola, has been appointed to a number of education committees for the state of Florida. Through them, Spagnola is hoping to use his knowledge and experience in the field of education to help shape and influence education in the state of Florida.

“To be a part of shaping the lives of students through working with such outstanding committees is both an honor and humbling,” says Spagnola. “I am honored to have been asked to serve.”

His recent appointments include:
Dr. Spagnola has served as chair of the College of Education at Argosy University, Sarasota since 2009. From 1996-2009, he served as a member of the Manatee County School Board Curriculum Team. Prior to joining the school board, he had served in numerous leadership roles in higher education. Dr. Spagnola holds a Doctor of Education in Administration, Supervision and Management in 1972 from the University of Sarasota (now Argosy University, Sarasota), a master’s degree in Education from the University of Montevallo, a master’s degree in Leadership from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor’s degree in Education from St. Bernard College.

Argosy University, Denver is pleased to announce the launch of two new Colorado state approved programs for educators. These programs include:
“These innovative and comprehensive programs combine flexible formats that include face-to-face and online learning designed for working professionals. “Courses are offered during the week, on weekends and online,” says Dr. Patricia Nelson, Program Chair in the College of Education at the campus.

 The EdD in Initial Educational Administration degree program is designed to prepare individuals to serve as school principals and/or building-level administrators. It is for practicing educators who have already completed a graduate level program from a regionally accredited institution or an appropriately certified foreign institution, and who are seeking administrative certification at the initial or K-12 level. Completion of the EdD in Initial Educational Administration degree program requires the satisfactory completion of 60 credit hours and results in a doctoral degree which includes a specific writing, research, and dissertation sequence. Program learning outcomes for the EdD in Educational Administration align with Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards. The program leads to Colorado principal certification upon completion of all state and program requirements.

 The purpose of Argosy University’s Master of Arts in Education (MAEd) in Educational Administration degree program is to prepare individuals to serve as school administrators. The program is designed for practicing educators who have already completed a bachelor’s degree program from a regionally accredited institution and seeking administrative credentialing. Based on state requirements, students may be required to complete additional experiences or coursework. The MAEd in Educational Administration degree program requires the satisfactory completion of 30 semester credit hours.

Shortly after completing her undergraduate studies in psychology, Dr. Alanna Kessler decided shortly that, though she loved the field, advancing in the discipline would require further education. She enrolled in and completed both a master’s and doctorate degree at Argosy University, Schaumburg.

Today, Dr. Kessler is a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Wisconsin and works as Assistant Professor of Pediatric Neuropsychology at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She is responsible for conducting pediatric neuropsychology evaluations for outpatients, as well as providing consultation to a number of other multi-disciplinary clinics at the local children’s hospital.  

During her time at Argosy, Dr. Kessler was exposed to many of the subspecialties within psychology, including psychological assessment, cognitive rehabilitation, and child/adolescent therapy.  After completing a practicum in a pediatric neuropsychology clinic, she felt she had found her calling and was able to specialize in Pediatric Neuropsychology during a two-year fellowship completed at the Dartmouth Medical School.

Moving forward in the field of psychology didn’t come without a price, she says. “I have moved numerous times and lived great distances away from my family.  However, the high quality of training I received has afforded me the opportunity to work in an excellent institution near my family.”  

“Argosy afforded me unique learning and training opportunities,” she says. I had relationships with professors who took the time to get to know me.  Like all students at Argosy University, Schaumburg, I received individual mentoring and guidance through the clinical training department which gave me an advantage during the competitive internship process.” She adds, “Not only did I receive excellent educational and professional mentoring, but I also acquired a support network that I still trust and rely on today.”

Dr. Kessler is a member of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, the International Neuropsychology Society and Psi Chi National Honor Society.

Dr. Orlando Rivero is influencing the academic world using the knowledge and skills he learned from Argosy University, Sarasota.
“During the time I was searching for a Doctoral Program, I was looking for a program that would fit into my family and day-to-day responsibilities. I was also looking for an institution of learning that would academically challenge me to pursue my outer limits.   Through its faculty members, I was able to learn the importance of academic research.  Most importantly, the faculty had years of industry experience, which made sense to attend Argosy University to complete my degree program,” commented Rivero.
Before attending Argosy University, Rivero was employed for the Miami-Dade County government for 20 years where he received the 2004 National Association of Counties (NACO) Achievement Award for the implementation of several community driven programs in Miami-Dade County, Florida.  While employed at Miami Dade County government, Rivero graduated with a Master of Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University.  He later went on to further his education by graduating in 2005 with a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) in Management from Argosy University, Sarasota. From there, Rivero went on to work for multiple universities across the country assisting with implementation of public administration and management courses as well as sitting on several dissertation committees.
Currently, Rivero is the Director of the Business Department at Carlos Abilzu University in Miami, Florida. As the Director, he oversees undergraduate and graduate programs for over 150 students. He also helped establish curriculum designs for the first Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)/Master of Business Administration (MBA) online programs, revised and updated curriculums for all upper division BBA and MBA courses, doubled the number of faculty with terminal degrees, increased BBA/MBA enrollment by 50% within a year period, and established Future Business Leaders of America and Phi Beta Lambda Society and Sigma Delta Honor Society among other accomplishments.
“I was able to make a career change at the age of 40 years old and continue to reach my career goals and objectives.  This would not have been possible if I had not taken the initiative to complete my DBA program at Argosy University,” commented Rivero on how Argosy University made a difference within his life. “Stay focused and continue to inspire to be. I thought I knew what I truly wanted to become, but Argosy University allowed me to pursue my goals and objective further.  Choosing Argosy University to complete my DBA program was a wise decision then and thank goodness I followed my intuition.”

The American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) has named Dr. Jason King Mental Health Counselor of the Year. King, who serves as Director of Clinical Training for the Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program at Argosy University, Salt Lake City, will receive his award at the AMHCA’s annual convention in Orlando, Florida later this month.

AMHCA is a growing community of more than 6,000 clinical mental health counselors whose mission it is to enhance the profession of clinical mental health counseling through licensing, advocacy, education and professional development. Their organization represents licensed clinical mental health counselors and state chapters, providing them with consistent standards of education, training, licensing, practice, advocacy and ethics.

“I am honored by this recognition from AMHCA, and I feel privileged to associate with my fellow clinical mental health counselors in Utah and throughout the nation,” says King.

In addition to his duties at Argosy University, Salt Lake City, King is the clinical director and co-owner of a clinical training and research facility, assisting agencies in seeking services for their clients. Last year, King was honored by the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) with the Outstanding Graduate Student Leadership Award.

Argosy University, Salt Lake City Announces Program Designed to Assist Law Enforcement Officers Seeking Their Degree 31 Aug 2012 11:03 AM (12 years ago)


Argosy University, Salt Lake City is pleased to announce the acceptance of Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) for prior learning assessment at the university. Through this assessment program, Utah peace officers can receive up to 29 college course credits when they choose to attend bachelor of science in criminal justice or other program at Argosy University.


Prior learning assessment is the process used by the university to evaluate learning acquired outside the classroom for the purpose of assigning academic credit. Common ways that college-level learning is acquired through law enforcement, corporate or military training; other work experience; civic activity; and independent study.

“Prior learning assessment helps us to recognize, through college credit, the knowledge, skills and training that peace officers in the state of Utah bring to their college education,” says campus President David Tietjen. “This helps our commitment to supporting the educational needs of our law enforcement community by helping those who qualify to reduce the total cost of, and amount of time it takes for, an officer to complete their education.”

Through prior learning assessment, Utah peace officers can potentially qualify for up to 17 college course credits for those who have completed their basic training or up to 29 credits for officers with several trainings. These credits can be applied towards and undergraduate degree at the university.

WESTERN STATE COLLEGE OF LAW ANNOUNCES 92% PASS RATE FOR GRADUATES TAKING CALIFORNIA BAR EXAM FOR THE FIRST-TIME 29 Aug 2012 9:12 AM (12 years ago)


Western State College of Law at Argosy University, the oldest law school in Orange County, California, is pleased to announce that 92%of its graduates taking the State Bar of California's Committee of BarExaminers exam for the first time in February of 2012 have passed, placing Western State College of Law first among the twenty California law schools who are American Bar Association (ABA) accredited.

“We are thrilled that our graduates who took the bar exam for the first time performed so well on the February exam,” says William Adams, Dean of the College. “Our graduates have demonstrated the value of their legal education at Western State and their commitment to the future of the profession.”

In all, 62% of the first-time exam takers from California ABA accredited law schools passed. The three-day General Bar Examination is administered twice a year, in February and July. The exam consists of three sections: a multiple-choice Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), six essay questions and two performance tests that are designed to assess an applicant's ability to apply general legal knowledge to practical tasks.

If the Western State College of Law graduates who passed the February 2012 California exam satisfy other requirements for admission, they will become members of the State Bar.

(NASHVILLE, TN – 2012)   Argosy University,Nashville student Joshua Stanley has been selected as Elementary School Counselor of the Year at the Middle Tennessee Counselor Association's annual awards banquet in Nashville. Stanley, a student in the Doctor of Education in Counselor Education and Supervision program at the Nashville campus, has served as school counselor for Barkers Mill Elementary School.

"I am deeply honored to be selected for this award,” says Stanley. “I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for educators and mentors who invested in me along the way. I just go to work everyday determined to make a difference for children."

Stanley holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and master’s degree in counseling from Austin Peay State University, and is currently completing his doctorate in counselor education and supervision at Argosy University, Nashville.

Grandmother of Fourteen Completes Master’s Degree Despite the Odds

Draper, Utah, June 1 – Argosy University, Salt Lake City is pleased to announce that Debbie Moon, a student in the University’s Marriage and Family Therapy program, has been named College/University Student of the Year at the annual Best in State Awards gala.

Moon recently completed the master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy program at the campus in just under two years, with a 4.0 GPA and after having lost both her home and her business very near her retirement. Moon came to Argosy University, Salt Lake City to pursue a calling she had discovered years before working with special needs students in art classes. Moon’s passion for the joy, transformation and healing that came from therapy pushed her through hurdles in her education, taking her from a woman to had never sent an email to an avid professional, blogging her clients and texting her 14 grandchildren. “Learning the technology was as much a challenge to me as learning my trade,” says Moon.  

“Debbie is an excellent student with an extraordinary gentleness in therapy and a unique ability to sense what a client needs in the moment,” says campus president David Tietjen. “Beyond her studies, Debbie is known for her support of her fellow classmates and desire to help her community.”

Moon and her husband have founded Harmony Counseling, where Moon helps patients with communication, trauma recovery, and healing generational patterns.  “I work with individuals, couples, families, teens, and children,” says Moon.  “I use Solution Focused Therapy which aims at the immediate solution so my clients can feel better right away.  I also use Emotionally Focused Therapy techniques to reduce distress in individuals and relationships and help my clients create more secure attachment bonds.  Mental health is flexibility; the ability to learn from experience and adapt to new situations.”

Congratulations to Argosy MHC Student, Monica Miller Long, who was awarded the Licensed Professional Counselor Association of North Carolina (LPCANC) Nancy Howell Scholarship. The Nancy Howell Scholarship Award is designed to acknowledge graduate students who demonstrate leadership potential as counseling students and as a future LPCs. Supported by student registration fees from the Annual Conference, this Scholarship provides student members a monetary award for student involvement in counseling. In addition to the monetary award, the recipients are provided the opportunity to volunteer working with the LPCANC Board and membership to foster professional relationships and inform students on the needs and concerns of the Counseling Profession.

(NASHVILLE, Tenn. – 2012)   Argosy University,Nashville is pleased to announce the launch of its Doctor of Education in Pastoral Community Counseling program.

The Doctor ofEducation (EdD) in Pastoral Community Counseling degree program is based on the belief that religious/spiritual communities provide unique opportunities for human growth and development and for establishing caring institutions and practices that contribute to flourishing human communities.

The diverse faith perspectives of contemporary culture share many goals in inviting citizens to practice their healing, sustaining, guiding and reconciling visions. “The Pastoral Community Counseling doctoral program envisions dialogue among the traditions as participants work together on behalf of a variety of religions. The program integrates engaging secular and theological knowledge, developing skills and reflective practices, and doing research in a manner that prepares the caregiver to address individual and community development in an ethically responsible fashion,”” says Dr. Kittie Myatt, Chair of the program at Argosy University, Nashville.

The EdD in PastoralCommunity Counseling degree program requires the satisfactory completion of 60 semester credit hours, distributed as follows: research requirements, 12 credit hours; core requirements, 30 credit hours; elective requirements, 6 credit hours; and dissertation requirements, 12 credit hours.

Argosy University, Twin Cities Hosts Information Session With FBI Special Agent 27 Jul 2012 7:20 AM (12 years ago)


(EAGAN, Minn. - 2012)   Argosy University, Twin Cities hosted an informal discussion session with FBI Special Agent, Karie Gibson Madson on Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 5 p.m. at its Eagan campus. Designed to offer attendees more information about careers in the FBI, the event offered the audience the opportunity to engage with the speaker about her profession and distinguished career. The event was hosted by the criminal justice and forensic psychology programs at the campus.

Dr. Gibson has served as a Special Agent with the FBI for six years and is assigned to the International Terrorism, Horn of Africa squad where she investigates acts of terrorism in the United States and abroad.  In addition, Dr. Gibson is the Primary Coordinator for the Minneapolis Division's National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) Program.  As the Primary NCAVC Coordinator, she routinely works with law enforcement agencies as a liaison for the Behavioral Analysis Units on homicide, missing person, counterterrorism, threat of violence, and kidnapping cases.  Also, Dr. Gibson is involved with the Employee Assistance Program, Critical Incident Program, and the Crisis Negotiation Team.

Prior to becoming an agent with the FBI, Dr. Gibson was and continues to be a licensed psychologist.  She was an officer in the United States Air Force (USAF) where, for four years, she worked as a psychologist conducting therapy and psychological assessments for military members and their families.  After the USAF, Dr. Gibson was a Forensic Evaluator for the State of Washington for one year before leaving to join the FBI.  As a Forensic Evaluator, Dr. Gibson completed court ordered evaluations such as competency to stand trial, mental state at time of offense, diminished capacity, insanity, and civil commitment evaluations for sex offenders and the mentally ill and dangerous.  Dr. Gibson holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota, Morris, and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from The Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Twin Cities.

When: July 31, Aug 1, 2, 3 


Time: 1pm to 3pm 


What: Get Ready for College Boot Camp 


Why: This will allow upcoming fall students and other interested students to learn about the process, get them excited about school and to stay focused while being involved with learning before school starts in September. The Boot Camp will be “techniques to manage your time & energy”. I know a lot of our students get overwhelmed when they begin the program and we want to make sure we offer some tips to help them stay focused and organized. We want to help students transition from the attitude and skills of a youth to the attitude and skills of an adult. 


Agenda: Daily activities including program chairs, graduates, outside community coming in to  present. We will host a technology workshop and writing Workshop during the camp. On the last day we will go over steps to getting started and give out certificates for completing the boot camp with a small luncheon at the end.

(ORANGE, Ca.  – 2012)   Dr. Roberto Cases, Program Chair for the administrative credential and graduate degree program for the five Southern California campuses of Argosy University has co-authored the book, Reflective Practice of Multi-unicultural School Leaders. Released in February of this year with co-author Dr. Paul Rodriguez of Cambridge College, the book was intended to address the authors’ deep-seated concerns for children who have been tagged “at risk” of school failure by the broad standards of the current school system.

Their aim is to improve the process of educating these children with new student-centric leadership and instruction methods that emphasize conscientiousness in the way educators should approach their students.  The authors, through their experience in leadership and instruction with children of different cross-culturally diverse backgrounds or who speak different languages, have made that experience a gauge for developing Reflective Practice of Multi-unicultural School Leaders, a book that may very well define a new standard in the way school systems operate.

Reflective practice involves the capacity to reflect on action so as to engage in a process of continuous learning, understanding, and thus improvement. (This is engagement on the individual leader, educator basis – a fluid way of adjusting and improving leadership methods day by day.) Multi-uniculturalism is the concept that, before understanding and acknowledging other cultures, individuals must first comprehend and embrace their own beliefs, values, traditions and physical environment. The authors, issuing a call for change in the American school system, advocate reflective practice as the best method to train multi-unicultural school leaders in the leadership and instruction of a cross-culturally diverse student body.

This book is a clarion call for educators throughout the United States.  The demographic trends indicate the need for updating, if not overhauling, the standards and methods with which America educates its young.  Sooner or later, the cases of students “at risk” of school failure will become a significant portion of the statistics as the educational system does not adjust to children’s cross-culturally diverse backgrounds and languages.  Before this happens, the authors have sounded the call for change as soon as humanly possible.

Dr. Casas has served as an adjunct professor in graduate and undergraduate courses in Education and Educational leadership for Cambridge College, Chapman University, Ontario, Concordia University, Irvine and California State University, Los Angeles.  Dr. Casas retired from public education in 2008 after serving more than 36 years.  He served as Deputy Superintendent for Lynwood Unified School District and as District Superintendent for Brawley Union High School District, in California.

(DRAPER, Ut. – 2012)   Argosy University, Salt Lake City Campus President David Tietjen has been appointed to the board of the Somos Foundation, the 501 (c)(3) non-profit arm of the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Tietjen will serve as a member of the organization’s Education Committee.
The mission of the Somos Foundation is to provide financial support through scholarships for post-secondary education, mentoring workshops, and networking resources to Utah Latino students and adults who have demonstrated a strong commitment to education and our community. In turn, the students will contribute to the economic development and well-being of all communities in Utah. The Utah Hispanic Business Leadership Foundation, d.b.a. American Soldier Network, Argosy University, Orange County and MicroSoft Bring Treats to the Troops with Wounded Warrior Holiday Drive

Orange, Calif., December 10 – Argosy University, Orange County is teaming up with the American Solider Network and MicroSoft to bring holiday cheer to wounded troops this year with the American Soldier Network’s Fourth Annual Holiday Project. The organizations will be partnering to stuff more than 500 red, white and blue coolers for wounded soldiers and troops throughout California.

Stuffing of the packs for soldiers will take place Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Microsoft store in the Shops at Mission Viejo, from 1 pm – 4 pm. Volunteers from the partner organizations will be filling coolers with items donated from a number of companies. Coolers will be delivered to military patients at Balboa Naval Hospital beginning December 17, 2010.

Items for the coolers have been donated by SnapOn Tools, Valic Insurance Corporation, Red Rock Resort and Casino, Uptone Pictures, Calvin Klein, Arbonne and a host of private and individual donors.
