What is Northern Soul?

Northern Soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s. It revolves around rare American soul records from the mid-1960s to early 1970s – typically obscure tracks with a fast tempo, emotive vocals, and strong beat, often released by lesser-known artists on small independent labels. The scene grew around iconic clubs like the Wigan Casino, Manchester’s Twisted Wheel, and the Blackpool Mecca, where dancers would spin, shuffle, and backflip through the night to forgotten soul gems.

To this day, Northern Soul lives on through a dedicated global community, keeping the spirit alive with allnighters, original vinyl, and a deep love for the sound.

Diversity Matters 21 May 12:11 AM (5 months ago)

Why Design and Architecture Must Reflect All of Us

In a time when diversity initiatives are being quietly dismantled across political and corporate landscapes, the creative industries — design, architecture, art — face a critical choice: stay silent or speak up with what we do best — create.

Major companies are cutting diversity programs, citing cost or controversy. Political narratives are shifting toward exclusion rather than inclusion. But design is inherently political. It shapes the spaces we move through, the interfaces we interact with, the messages we absorb. When we design, we make choices about who is seen — and who is not.

That’s why diversity in design and architecture isn’t just a moral imperative. It’s a functional one.

Design for the Many, Not the Few

A staircase without a ramp excludes the wheelchair user. A public square without shade ignores the elderly. An app that only understands one skin tone, or a logo that doesn’t resonate with a multicultural audience — these are not accidents. They are outcomes of design processes that lack diversity.

Inclusive design doesn’t just mean checking boxes. It means embedding multiple perspectives into the heart of the creative process — from research and concept to execution and feedback. It means asking: Who is this for? Who is being left out?

Let’s Design a Future for Everyone

When people see themselves reflected in public space, product design, branding, or storytelling, it validates their place in society. It builds trust. It drives engagement. And — let’s be honest — it makes good business sense. Brands that authentically embrace diversity are more resilient, more relevant, and more successful.

But beyond business, representation is about dignity. Architecture and design can be tools of exclusion — or they can be powerful forces for visibility, connection, and belonging.

Creativity as Counter-Narrative

The creative industry has the power — and the responsibility — to respond to regressive trends by moving forward, not backward. Where politics retreats from diversity, we can lean in. Where business leaders hedge their bets, we can take a stand.

Every project, every space, every product is an opportunity to affirm that diversity matters. That people of all races, genders, abilities, ages, and identities have the right to be seen, heard, and considered.

Diversity isn’t a trend. It’s the world we live in. And if design is about reflecting and shaping that world — then inclusive design is not optional. It’s essential.

Diversity matters. In politics. In business. And especially in design.

As architects, designers, creatives — we need to listen more. Collaborate wider. Question our defaults. And challenge the systems we’re part of.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about intention.

In a time when others are stepping back from diversity, let’s move boldly forward.

Diversity matters. In politics. In business. And especially in design.

Let’s make it visible.

Bewusstsein schaffen:

Design in Cologne: A Complicated Relationship Status 26 Oct 2024 12:56 PM (11 months ago)

The Aftermath of IMM Cologne 2025 Cancellation

The recent cancellation of IMM Cologne 2025 in January has left the design community in Cologne in a state of uncertainty. Alongside the concurrent Passagen event, which is steadily losing its appeal, we must ask ourselves: Where is the direction of design and furniture in Cologne heading? As Frankfurt prepares to be the design capital in 2025, Cologne appears to be drifting, with little more than cancellations and a lack of initiatives to showcase its design potential.

A Diminishing International Profile

Compared to other cities, Cologne is losing its stature as a design hub on the international stage. While Frankfurt gears up for its upcoming designation, Cologne’s design scene seems stagnant. Where are the initiatives, roundtables, and design competitions that could breathe new life into the local scene? The absence of pitches and collaborative projects has led to a pressing need for a restart in reactivating Cologne’s rich design tradition.

Is Cologne Content with Its Current Image?

With the Cologne Cathedral and Carnival as the city’s defining symbols, one has to wonder: Is Cologne satisfied with its existing identity? The city’s design culture deserves more than just a historical backdrop. What other unique aspects does Cologne have to offer? Unfortunately, even the local football team, FC Köln, is experiencing a slump, mirroring the city’s stagnation. Now is the time for a renaissance in design; we need to revitalize our creative spirit and establish Cologne as a vibrant player in the design world once more.

Call to Action

Cologne’s design community must come together for a fresh start! Let’s initiate discussions, spark ideas, and collaborate on innovative projects that showcase our city’s potential. If you’re a designer, an entrepreneur, or simply passionate about the creative scene in Cologne, join us in reactivating our design tradition. Contact us today to share your ideas and be part of the movement that will redefine Cologne’s design future!
