Invisible Art 30 Sep 2014 6:34 PM (11 years ago)

Art enthusiasts admire Newstrom’s invisible paintings and sculptures
at the Schulberg Gallery in New York.
27-year-old artist Lana Newstrom says she is the first artist in the world to create invisible “art.” In this documentary, CBC Radio traveled to her empty studio to learn more about Lana and her unusual artistic process.

According to Newstrom, “Just because you can’t see anything, doesn’t mean I didn’t put hours of work into creating a particular piece”.

“Art is about imagination and that is what my work demands of the people interacting with it. You have to imagine a painting or sculpture is in front of you,” says Newstrom. Paul Rooney, Lana’s agent, believes she might be the greatest artist alive working today: “When she describes what you can’t see, you begin to realize why one of her invisible works can fetch upwards of a million dollars.” said Rooney.

Cosmic Rays Warning, Turn-off your Cellphone 19 Sep 2014 7:48 PM (11 years ago)

MANILA - A text message about "cosmic rays" and space radiation damaging your mobile phone is a hoax.

Neither ABS-CBN's "Kuya Kim" Atienza nor BBC News have reported such a threat.

What BBC has is a 2010 report on how gullible people in Ghana fell for false rumors about "cosmic rays" causing earthquakes when they hit the earth.

The latest version of the hoax goes something like this:
I-off nyo mamaya lahat ng mga cellphones and gadgets 10:30pm until 3:30 in the morning kasi malakas ang radiation na dadaan sa mundo. Cosmic rays, nucli atomic ang tawag. Binalita ni kuya kim tsaka sa BBC News sa cable. Makakamatay daw, huwag itabi sa tulog ang cellphone. Please pass para ma-inform ung iba.
The Daily Trend's Danley Rubica said a similar hoax happened in 2010 in the US.

"One hoax news had recently spread these past days and this hoax is about cosmic rays from Mars that will hit Earth. This cosmic rays was rumored in the hoax that can cause high radiation in opened gadgets and it is added to the hoax that everyone mus turn off their gadgets starting 10:30pm up to 3:30am tomorrow. The hoax had spread all over the country thru text and was spammed all over other cellphone users," Rubica said.

According to Coolbuster.net, similar hoax text messages are believed to have started in 2008.

"The obvious intention is to cause panic, but criminals also use it to victimize people," the website explains.

"Here's how the fraud goes: Once you turn off your phone, crooks will contact your loved ones and tell them that you met an accident. Because your phone is off, it will be impossible for your family, relatives, or friends to reach you and verify your condition. The criminals will then ask from them cellphone load or money. That's it," it adds.

Upwarm Allegedly Involve in Pyramiding Scam 30 Jul 2014 6:55 AM (11 years ago)

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) warns the public against a company involved in multi-million peso investment scam that victimizes hundreds of investors via Facebook account.

NBI reported that the company allegedly involved on the said investment scam is the Upwarm Limited Co., who flagged himself as a local direct sales company selling various goods.

On the investigation conducted by the NBI Anti-Fraud and Action Divisiion (NBI-AFAD), the Upwarm allegedly involve in pyramiding scam.

"We found out that while the company claims to be engaged in direct selling of different products, Upwarm's focus was mainly on recruitment. It does not market any product at all," said NBI agent Atty. Norman Anire.

In June alone, up to 168 investors from different places in the country filed a complaint against Upwarm allegedly deceived to invest in the company.

Based on information gathered by the NBI, the Upwarm is a partnership-type company built by Rodolfo de los Santos Miranda Jr. on March 14, 2014 and his business partner were Josephine Miranda, Ramill Carreon and Jocelyn Valdez.

Meanwhile, NBI said that Upwarm was a networking business asking for P1,499.00 membership fee from investors and deposited into the bank account of Rodolfo. With Facebook, each member is encouraged to recruit two new members to its account to become active to earn P6,000.00 per month.

Amalayer trends on social media: The story behind the tag 14 Nov 2012 4:50 PM (12 years ago)

#Amalayer trends on Twitter: What was it all about?
By Kim Arveen Patria | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom

Filipino tweeps again had a field day as a video showing a Light Rail Transit (LRT) passenger seemingly haranguing a security guard made rounds online.

The video was posted on Facebook Tuesday by Gregory Paulo Llamoso, who said he caught the encounter using his camera when he was about to leave the LRT Santolan Station that same day.

"A loud voice caught my attention and all the people present there, ang lakas ng boses niya even she was small (She had loud voice for one so small)," Llamoso said. The video now has over 50,000 shares and over 12,000 "likes" as of this posting.

The video showed the passenger saying: "So now you're making me look like a liar? I'm a liar?"

"Ate, may pinag-aralan akong tao! Ginanon mo ako; I'm just returning the favor (I'm an educated person. You did that to me; I'm just returning the favor)," she added, gesturing that she was pushed.

Hours later, the hashtag #amalayer, which apparently comes from "I'm a liar", became a hit on social networking site Twitter. Paula Jamie Salvosa, which was floated as the passenger's name, also became a trending topic.

The man who caught the video admitted that he did not know the passenger's side of the story, but he added that a bystander told him that the guard scolded the woman for using the wrong entrance.

"Alam mo kung pano mo ako tinanong? Pano mo ako tinanong? 'Ate, anong problema mo?' (Do you know how you asked me? 'What's your problem?')" the passenger complained.

In his post, Llamoso highlighted the fact that the lady guard stayed calm and did not match the passenger's apparent fury.

"Buti nalang the lady guard exhibited the right behavior (The good thing is that the lady guard exhibited the right behavior)," Llamoso said.

"She did not fight back and she just kept cool and said her sorry. She didn’t even utter foul words against the bully passenger," he added.

Llamoso also said he approached the LRT office and asked that they take up the matter privately, even as he remarked that the passenger "degraded" the lady guard.

"[H]er arrogance and misplaced sense is a living proof that being a true woman requires more than just privileged education and breeding..." he added.

AFP Fake EMail 11 Nov 2012 7:17 PM (12 years ago)

Armed Forces warns of fake Internet messages sent in its name

MANILA, Philippines—The Armed Forces of the Philippines warned the public Wednesday about an e-mail account purporting to be the military’s that sends messages supposedly from Camp Aguinaldo’s Public Affairs Office.

The AFP Public Affairs Office  identified the fake e-mail address as paoafp@ymail.com. The military information office’s real e-mail address is paoafp@gmail.com.

“It has come to our attention that a certain email account ‘paoafp@ymail.com’ suspected to be mimicking the correspondence procedures of our office has been sending unverified and suspicious information to our contacts,” a statement from the PAO AFP said.

The bogus e-mail was discovered last Monday, when the AFP PAO was alerted by a contact from the Department of National Defense who reported receiving “a suspicious email from paoafp@ymail.com,” the statement said.

The fake e-mail claimed to be “classified” correspondence that “should not be transmitted.” It attached a file that supposedly contained “the copy of PNOY’s remarks on ASEM.” A check by the Philippine Daily Inquirer showed that the attachment was an empty document.

President Benigno Aquino III was in Laos Nov. 5 and 6 for the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting.
“In view of the recent happening, the Public Affairs Office of the Armed Forces of the Philippines is sending this message to all of our contacts from the local and foreign media, private individuals, non-government organizations, and other partner agencies in order to warn them of the matter,” the statement said.

The PAO AFP also asked that anyone who has received e-mail from paoafp@ymail.com report it to its office by sending an e-mail to paoafp@gmail.com.

The military office also urged the public to be “very cautious when opening e-mails coming from anonymous and suspicious senders.”

Filipino Reading Habbit 6 Nov 2012 7:55 PM (12 years ago)

Do Pinoys wear the old coat and buy the new book?

THE JOY OF READING. The Bible still reigns supreme. Screen grab from YouTube (The Joy of Books)THE JOY OF READING. The Bible still reigns supreme. Screen grab from YouTube (The Joy of Books)
MANILA, Philippines - I am a slow reader.

I savor the words, let phrases linger longer in the mouth.

But I read several books at a time.

Sometimes, 5 or 6. Sometimes, more.

I cannot read before going to bed because it makes me sleepy, even if the book’s a thriller.

The best reading time for me would be in the early morning, during waiting time or while on travel.

These are some of my reading habits and behavior. And if you’re a smart book writer or publisher, you will find a way to get your hands on facts that pertain to your market’s reading attitudes and practices.

LINDA LUZ B. GUERRERO, VP and COO of Social Weather Stations (SWS) presents the results of the National Book Development Board (NBDB) Readership SurveyLINDA LUZ B. GUERRERO, VP and COO of Social Weather Stations (SWS) presents the results of the National Book Development Board (NBDB) Readership Survey
If publishers and writers knew, for instance, that there is more demand for books written in local dialects, then they can (and they should) produce more books that will cater to this need.

This is the aim of the National Book Development Board (NBDB) Readership Survey of 2012. In partnership with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) and Vibal Foundation, NBDB commissioned the Social Weather Stations (SWS) to conduct a survey among Filipino readers to determine reading behavior and habits.

The results were presented to an audience composed mainly of book publishers in August in Pasig.
Why the book writers were not there is a whole story on its own, worthy of a separate write-up.
Since March 2003, NBDB has been conducting what NBDB chair Flor Marie Sta. Romana-Cruz described as the “most comprehensive survey on book readership in the country.” The second survey was undertaken in 2007. This year’s survey is the 3rd one.

Sta. Romana-Cruz believed that the results of the readership survey are useful for publishers, the Department of Education, mass media and the general public.

Bible still at number 1
A SLIDE FROM THE NBDB Readership Survey 2012 presentationA SLIDE FROM THE NBDB Readership Survey 2012 presentation
Linda Luz B. Guerrero, vice president and chief operating officer of Social Weather Stations (SWS) presented the results of the survey in 258 slides.

While some of the data didn’t quite reach me and I got lost in a haze of statistical jargon and technical obscuration, I believe I still managed to get the most important facts.

Here is a summary of the results of the 2012 NBDB Readership Survey:
  1. The average number of non-school books read by the respondents in the past 12 months is 6.
  2. The respondents read for information and knowledge. But based on this year’s survey results, more people are reading books for enjoyment.
  3. The top 3 on the list of “best-sellers” are: the bible, romance novels and cookbooks.
  4. At the very bottom are these categories: music, poetry, psychology and erotica.
  5. More respondents are reading books in Tagalog, next in English, and then Filipino. (Notice the distinction between Tagalog and Filipino.)
  6. 45% of respondents read Filipino authors only. 43% read foreign and Pinoy authors.
  7. When choosing books, the respondents are influenced by the blurb (44%), word of mouth (40%) and television (16%).
  8. The respondents get their non-school books by borrowing from others (47%), receiving them as gifts (44%), borrowing from the library (25%), renting (20%) or buying (16%).
  9. 16% of the respondents bought a non-school book in the last year. In 2007, the figure was 19%. In 2003, it was 22%.
  10. The number of non-school books purchased for personal reading in the last 12 months (mean) is 4.8.
  11. More people are now buying non-school books that are on sale, or at a discount.
  12. Of those who read non-school books, only 6% read e-books.
  13. Of those who read e-books, 34% started reading books in this format in 2011.
  14. 90% of respondents still prefer books that are printed and with the original cover 90%. The second preferred format is photocopied books, and the least preferred is digital or e-books.
  15. 86% say that books are not only good for school but also for daily activities.
  16. More respondents also consider books as good gifts.
  17. Respondents who watch TV, read newspapers, listen to the radio, watch DVD also read non-school books. All of the internet users surveyed read non-school books.
  18. Respondents who read non-school books declined in Visayas and Mindanao.
  19. Highest percentage of those who read non-school books are people who are single, college graduates and those with more income.
  20. Readers are getting younger. More readers are starting at 13 years old. (mean)
  21. Fact: Most people have time to read if they will choose to do so.
  22. Fact: Respondents believe that local books are written well.
  23. Fact: Books that look good (cover design, layout, etc.) are generally preferred.
What are we to do with these facts?
MAJORITY OF ATTENDEES WERE publishersMAJORITY OF ATTENDEES WERE publishers
Sta. Romana-Cruz asked the heavy questions: What have we done, really, to promote reading and to package it as a worthwhile activity? How can we do a better job and move forward? How do we make reading more palatable?

(My question: Why should we? Reading is its own reward; it’s not something to be endured.)
With the kind of books we are producing (look around you and take a long look at bestsellers towers and displays in bookstores), what kind of readers are we creating?
DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) Atty. Ricardo R. Blancaflor giving the closing remarksDIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) Atty. Ricardo R. Blancaflor giving the closing remarks
I was chatting on Facebook yesterday with a writer friend who told me that he didn’t want to jump into the bandwagon. (He is a published, multi-awarded writer.)

I told him: At least more people are reading books, isn’t that a good thing?

Internet Doomsday Virus 6 Jul 2012 6:17 PM (13 years ago)

Virus could black out nearly 250,000 PCs

BOSTON (Reuters) - About a quarter-million computer users around the world are at risk of losing Internet access on Monday because of malicious software at the heart of a hacking scam that U.S. authorities shut down last November.

Some blogs and news reports hyped the risk of an outage, warning of a potential "blackout" and describing the Alureon malware as the "Internet Doomsday" virus.

Yet experts said only a tiny fraction of computer users were at risk, and Internet providers would be on call to quickly restore service. They said they considered the threat to be small compared with more-prevalent viruses such as Zeus and SpyEye, which infect millions of PCs and are used to commit financial fraud.

As of this week, about 245,000 computers worldwide were still infected by Alureon and its brethren, according to security firm Deteque. That included 45,355 computers in the United States.

The viruses were designed to redirect Internet traffic through rogue DNS servers controlled by criminals, according to the FBI. DNS servers are computer switchboards that direct Web traffic.

When authorities took down the rogue servers, a federal judge in New York ordered that temporary servers be kept in place while the victims' machines were repaired. The temporary servers will shut down at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) on Monday, which means the infected PCs that have not been fixed will no longer be able to connect to the Internet.

Some U.S. Internet providers, including AT&T Inc and Time Warner Cable, have made temporary arrangements so that their customers will be able to access the Internet using the address of the rogue DNS servers.

Information on how to identify and clean up infections can be found on a website that a group of security firms and other experts set up: http://www.dcwg.org.

"It's a very easy one to fix," said Gunter Ollmann, vice president of research for security company Damballa. "There are plenty of tools available."

Many of the machines that remain infected are probably not in active use since most victims were notified of the problem, said security expert Johannes Ullrich, who runs the Internet Storm Center, which monitors Web threats.

The United States has charged seven people for orchestrating the worldwide Internet fraud. Six were arrested in Estonia, while the seventh, who was living in Russia, is still at large. Tallinn has so far extradited two of the men to New York where they appeared in Manhattan federal court.

The case is USA v. Tsastsin et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-cr-878.

Piracy in the Philippines 16 May 2012 8:12 PM (13 years ago)

Piracy thriving in PH, says study

Is piracy in the Philippines thriving more than ever?

According to a global survey by the Business Software Alliance, Filipinos installed around P14.6 billion worth of pirated software last year, with users admitting 70 percent of programs installed were unlicensed,

Citing its 2011 BSA Global Piracy Study, the business group said piracy in the Philippines was slightly higher than the 69 percent reported in 2010.

Although high when compared to Singapore (33 percent) and Malaysia (55 percent), Filipino software users are not the worst offenders.

BSA reported the highest piracy rates in the region is in Indonesia--86 percent--followed by Vietnam (81 percent) and Thailand (72 percent). Globally, the piracy rate is at 57 percent, BSA said.

"If 57 percent of consumers admitted they shoplift--even rarely—-authorities would react by increasing police patrols and penalties. Software piracy demands a similar response: concerted public education and vigorous law enforcement," said Roland Chan, BSA Senior Director for Marketing in Asia Pacific.

The BSA survey found piracy rates higher in emerging markets "account for an overwhelming majority of the global increase in the commercial value of software theft." The study also found that business leaders admitted to piracy more often than other users.

"They are more than twice as likely as others to say they buy software for one computer and then install it on additional machines in their offices," BSA said.

"Software piracy persists as a drain on the global economy, IT innovation and job creation," said BSA president and CEO Robert Holleyman. He said "governments must take steps to modernize their IP laws and expand enforcement efforts to ensure that those who pirate software face real consequences."

In the Philippines, software piracy is addressed by the Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team composed of the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police, the Optical Media Board, and the Intellectual Property Office.

In a sweep in Pampanga in April, the PAPT confiscated 100 software installers believed used in computer shops and in local malls.

"We have been impressing upon everyone that software piracy is a violation of the Copyright Provisions of the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines and the Optical Media Act. Offenders will be subjected to criminal sanctions of up to nine years of imprisonment and a fine of up to P1.5 million," OMB executive director Cyrus Valenzuela said then. Source: Yahoo News

Facebook Who Visited Your Account Application 6 Apr 2012 11:54 PM (13 years ago)

'Check who visited your Facebook profile?' It's a scam!

A computer security firm warned Facebook users this week against installing and running a supposed app that promises to let one see who has viewed his or her profile.
Sophos said the rogue app is preceded by messages claiming Facebook has issued a new update which allows a user to check who has visited his or her profile.

“Clearly rogue applications like this could be used for scooping up personal information, or spreading spam and scams across the social network,” it said in a blog post.
It said the rogue application claims to be a “New Update from Facebook” that allows one to “check who visited your profile.”

Sophos said the app would post a message to the user’s Facebook page without the user’s explicit permission, and encouraging others to use the app.

“So if you fell for it, remove the messages from your timeline, revoke the app’s publishing rights and report it as spam to Facebook, and ensure that you have revoked its access to your account,” it advised.

“And remember this - Facebook does not give you any way to find out who has been viewing your profile. Any application or link which claims it can reveal to you who has should be treated with great suspicion,” it added. — TJD, GMA News

Bamboo Bikes only in the Philippines 25 Mar 2012 5:15 PM (13 years ago)

Philippine Bamboo Bikes Hit Market

MANILA, Philippines - Bike frames have come a long way from steel and aluminum to exotic alloys and carbon fibers. Now, in the Philippines, they're going all the way back to bamboo.

The "bamboo bike" is turning into the latest hot item for environmentalists here, with its low carbon footprint. Bamboo is also tough and light: Bamboo bike frames weigh about seven to ten pounds.

The bikes are made by KawayanTech (Kawayan is a Filipino term for bamboo), a company whose objectives are to develop "indigenous forms of bikes and other alternative means of transport," including bamboo bikes and bamboo skateboards as "social entrepreneurship," according to its mission statement.

It was founded in 2009 by members of the University of the Philippines Mountaineers club, including Hecky Villanueva, an urban anthropologist; dive instructor and resort operator Boy Siojo; visual artist Eng Chan; US-based educator John Climaco; and Eric Cadiz, an electrical engineer who also runs a motorcycle dealership.

Within months, the group had a business plan to develop products balancing profits with social responsibility -- including a bike with a frame made from tough bamboo. When one member of the group, Mr. Villanueva, died of brain aneurysm in 2010, his wife, Tammy, took on a bigger role.

"People will usually think metal bikes are better because they've been tried and tested," said Ms. Villanueva. "But bamboo bikes can be symbolic of being environmental; (they) show support of a livelihood program or social cause; (and they) represent who you are -- a fun, healthy, earth-loving citizen."

Ms. Villanueva said more than just being a means of transportation, the bamboo bike is also a work of art. Typically, the company sells the frames only, so that bikers can pick out their own components so that each of the bikes can have a custom, personal feel.

Each one is handmade. The company gets its bamboo from suppliers in multiple parts of the Philippines, relying on varieties that are hard and durable, including some that are used for furniture and in construction. The bamboo is then dried to avoid splitting, with abaca, a plant fiber, used to join the poles together. The only power tool used in production is an electric drill, which runs for a maximum of three minutes per frame.

People who use the bikes say they provide a smoother ride than some of the most sophisticated metal alloys, in large part because bamboo naturally absorbs shocks from bumpy rides.

"For the past few months before I got the bamboo bike, I was riding a full suspension rig -- I was used to soft and flexible rides," says Jong Narciso, a seasoned mountain bike racer who recently picked up a bamboo bike. When he took it for a spin, "the bamboo was absorbing the bumps and chatter of the road and trail," he said. It also handled jumps well. "The frame was able to take the abuse," he said.

So far, KawayanTech has sold over 80 different kinds of bikes, including a child's bike for toddlers and bigger children who are learning how to ride called a "Push Bike," which sells for P5,000 ($119). Higher-performance bikes, such as mountain bikes also made of bamboo frames, are sold for P20,000 ($476), while commuter or "city" bikes cost P10,000($238).

KawayanTech also produced the Philippines' first electric bamboo bike, the Electric Eric, designed and built by Eric Cadiz, who earned the nickname "Electric Eric" after being struck by lightning while on a mountain several years ago. It includes a motor but also many components made from bamboo, including seat stays made of laminated bamboo.

The company also plans to build bamboo skateboards and wheelchairs.

Despite the enthusiasm from some serious bikers, the eco-friendly bikes have yet to crack the mainstream market. Joni Bonifacio, an organizer of biking tours in Catbalogan, in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, does not believe in the durability of the bamboo bike frames.

"The bike fames are not available in our province. Bamboo frames are not good for rugged terrain. If I go to the mountains and the bike experiences jumps and bumps, the frame might break," he said.

Some other bikers -- like Lalaine Agarma Barroga, an organizer of Bikexplore Philippines who works at the Milo Caca Bike shop -- say the bamboo bikes are just too expensive for what they provide. Such bikes are "not durable compared to alloy or carbon," she said. "This type of frame is for recreational use only."

Ms. Villanueva dismisses those fears, noting that metal frames themselves can split -- and are dangerous when they do. "A bamboo bike cannot split in two because of having so much fiber," she says.

Yahoo sues Facebook for infringing 10 patents

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc sued Facebook Inc over 10 patents that include methods and systems for advertising on the Web, opening the first major legal battle among big technology companies in social media.

The lawsuit, filed in a San Jose, California federal court on Monday, marks a major escalation of patent litigation that has already swept up the smartphone and tablet sectors and high-tech stalwarts such as Apple Inc, Microsoft Corp and Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.
Yahoo's patent lawsuit follows Facebook's announcement of plans for an initial public offering that could value the company at about $100 billion.
Facebook spokesman Jonathan Thaw said Facebook learned of the lawsuit through the media.
"We're disappointed that Yahoo, a longtime business partner of Facebook and a company that has substantially benefited from its association with Facebook, has decided to resort to litigation," he said.
In an emailed statement, Yahoo said it is confident it will prevail.
"Unfortunately, the matter with Facebook remains unresolved and we are compelled to seek redress in federal court," the company said in a statement.

Yahoo, one of the Web's pioneering companies, has seen its revenues decline in recent years at a time when rivals such as Facebook and Google have thrived. In January, Yahoo appointed former PayPal President Scott Thompson as its new chief executive, replacing Carol Bartz, who was fired in September.
Yahoo said late last month it was seeking licensing fees from Facebook over its patents and that other companies have already agreed to such licensing deals.

A Journey to Heavenly Vacation 12 Mar 2012 4:53 PM (13 years ago)

A JOURNEY TO HEAVENLY VACATION (3N/4D)
Route: Manila – Bulacan – Pampanga – Tarlac – Pangasinan – Cagayan - Baguio - Manila

DAY ONE - From Manila, take the North Luzon Expressway and exit via Tabang to proceed to Malolos, Bulacan for a visit to the Church of Our Lady of Carmel. Built in 1871 – 1878, the church became the seat of the short-lived Philippine Republic and site of the first constitutional convention beginning in 1898 which passed the Malolos Constitution. It houses the NHI Barasoain Lights and Sound and Ecclesiastical Museum. Also within the city is the Basilica Minore de Immaculada Concepcion whose convent became the presidential quarters of the Philippine Republic led by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. The seat of the Diocese of Malolos, it was declared a basilica in 1999 by Pope John Paul II.

Drive back to the North Luzon Expressway via Pulilan to take the Angeles-Magalang exit. Proceed to Angeles City to visit the Holy Rosary Parish Church along Sto. Rosario St. The gothic church was built in beginning in 1877 – 1898 thru the so-called forced labor system imposed by the Spanish colonial government on the townspeople of Angeles City.

Spend a night in any of the standard-class hotel accommodation in Clark.

DAY TWO - The following day, resume your journey by driving towards north via SCTex in Clark for a quick drive through Tarlac. Take the San Miguel (Hacienda Luisita) exit to proceed to Brgy. San Sebastian along MacArthur Hwy. To take a right turn to the bypass road (Tarlac - Pangasinan) toward the town of Camiling. Follow the 36-km backcountry but well-paved road to Brgy. Lubigan in San Jose, Tarlac (turns are well signposted). Spend an hour or so at the Church of the Risen Christ where a relic or particle of the Holy Cross from Germany is enshrined in a silver reliquary. The Holy Mass is celebrated daily (except Thursday) at 10:00 in the morning after which the faithful is allowed to the reliquary to pay their homage and be blessed with spirituality.

In the afternoon, proceed to MacArthur Hwy. bound for Pangasinan to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag. An apparition and several miracles have made the Lady a famous destination for thousands of devotees of the faith from around the world.

Time permitting, swing by the 14 Stations of the Cross in Bani, or the postcard-pretty churches of Dagupan City, Binmaley, Lingayen, Labrador, Sual or Alaminos.

Spend the night in any of the accommodation facilities in the area.

DAY THREE - The following day, proceed to the heartland of Cagayan to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Piat. The image was supposedly brought to the Philippines from Macao in 1604 by Dominican Friars. In 1954, her church was declared a National Shrine by His Excellency Most Rev. Egidio Vagnozzi, the Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines. The image is known throughout the country as the Black Mary, making Piat the pilgrimage center of the northeast. Guests can also visit the imposing Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Tuguegarao City or the Iguig Church and Calvary Hills known for its larger-than-life statues of the Stations of the Cross.

Proceed to the Baguio Cathedral where one hurdles 100 steps before reaching the top of the hill. Optionally, one may also visit the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes – a religious shrine where about 252 steps lead to the top of the hill before one may offer sacrifices, devotion and prayers. Here, one is rewarded with a panoramic view of the city.

DAY FOUR - Spend another night in the Pine City for a well-deserved relaxing vacation. Go souvenir hunting before one drives back to Manila.

Steve Jobs Death 6 Oct 2011 11:49 PM (14 years ago)

Steve Jobs leans against his wife, Laurene Powell Jobs
(Lea Suzuki/San Francisco Chronicle/Corbis)
The Apple chairman and former CEO who made personal computers, smartphones, tablets, and digital animation mass-market products passed away.

Steven P. Jobs passed away on October 5th, 2011 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was just 56 years old.

9 things you didn’t know about the life of Steve Jobs

For all of his years in the spotlight at the helm of Apple, Steve Jobs in many ways remains an inscrutable figure — even in his death. Fiercely private, Jobs concealed most specifics about his personal life, from his curious family life to the details of his battle with pancreatic cancer — a disease that ultimately claimed him on Wednesday, at the age of 56.

While the CEO and co-founder of Apple steered most interviews away from the public fascination with his private life, there's plenty we know about Jobs the person, beyond the Mac and the iPhone. If anything, the obscure details of his interior life paint a subtler, more nuanced portrait of how one of the finest technology minds of our time grew into the dynamo that we remember him as today.

1. Early life and childhood
Jobs was born in San Francisco on February 24, 1955. He was adopted shortly after his birth and reared near Mountain View, California by a couple named Clara and Paul Jobs. His adoptive father — a term that Jobs openly objected to — was a machinist for a laser company and his mother worked as an accountant.

Later in life, Jobs discovered the identities of his estranged parents. His birth mother, Joanne Simpson, was a graduate student at the time and later a speech pathologist; his biological father, Abdulfattah John Jandali, was a Syrian Muslim who left the country at age 18 and reportedly now serves as the vice president of a Reno, Nevada casino. While Jobs reconnected with Simpson in later years, he and his biological father remained estranged.

2. College dropout
The lead mind behind the most successful company on the planet never graduated from college, in fact, he didn't even get close. After graduating from high school in Cupertino, California — a town now synonymous with 1 Infinite Loop, Apple's headquarters — Jobs enrolled in Reed College in 1972. Jobs stayed at Reed (a liberal arts university in Portland, Oregon) for only one semester, dropping out quickly due to the financial burden the private school's steep tuition placed on his parents.

In his famous 2005 commencement speech to Stanford University, Jobs said of his time at Reed: "It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple."

3. Fibbed to his Apple co-founder about a job at Atari
Jobs is well known for his innovations in personal computing, mobile tech, and software, but he also helped create one of the best known video games of all-time. In 1975, Jobs was tapped by Atari to work on the Pong-like game Breakout.

He was reportedly offered $750 for his development work, with the possibility of an extra $100 for each chip eliminated from the game's final design. Jobs recruited Steve Wozniak (later one of Apple's other founders) to help him with the challenge. Wozniak managed to whittle the prototype's design down so much that Atari paid out a $5,000 bonus — but Jobs kept the bonus for himself, and paid his unsuspecting friend only $375, according to Wozniak's own autobiography.

4. The wife he leaves behind
Like the rest of his family life, Jobs kept his marriage out of the public eye. Thinking back on his legacy conjures images of him commanding the stage in his trademark black turtleneck and jeans, and those solo moments are his most iconic. But at home in Palo Alto, Jobs was raising a family with his wife, Laurene, an entrepreneur who attended the University of Pennsylvania's prestigious Wharton business school and later received her MBA at Stanford, where she first met her future husband.

For all of his single-minded dedication to the company he built from the ground up, Jobs actually skipped a meeting to take Laurene on their first date: "I was in the parking lot with the key in the car, and I thought to myself, 'If this is my last night on earth, would I rather spend it at a business meeting or with this woman?' I ran across the parking lot, asked her if she'd have dinner with me. She said yes, we walked into town and we've been together ever since."

In 1991, Jobs and Powell were married in the Ahwahnee Hotel at Yosemite National Park, and the marriage was officiated by Kobin Chino, a Zen Buddhist monk.

5. His sister is a famous author
Later in his life, Jobs crossed paths with his biological sister while seeking the identity of his birth parents. His sister, Mona Simpson (born Mona Jandali), is the well-known author of Anywhere But Here — a story about a mother and daughter that was later adapted into a film starring Natalie Portman and Susan Sarandon.

After reuniting, Jobs and Simpson developed a close relationship. Of his sister, he told a New York Times interviewer: "We're family. She's one of my best friends in the world. I call her and talk to her every couple of days.'' Anywhere But Here is dedicated to "my brother Steve."

6. Celebrity romances
In The Second Coming of Steve Jobs, an unauthorized biography, a friend from Reed reveals that Jobs had a brief fling with folk singer Joan Baez. Baez confirmed the the two were close "briefly," though her romantic connection with Bob Dylan is much better known (Dylan was the Apple icon's favorite musician). The biography also notes that Jobs went out with actress Diane Keaton briefly.

7. His first daughter
When he was 23, Jobs and his high school girlfriend Chris Ann Brennan conceived a daughter, Lisa Brennan Jobs. She was born in 1978, just as Apple began picking up steam in the tech world. He and Brennan never married, and Jobs reportedly denied paternity for some time, going as far as stating that he was sterile in court documents. He went on to father three more children with Laurene Powell. After later mending their relationship, Jobs paid for his first daughter's education at Harvard. She graduated in 2000 and now works as a magazine writer.

8. Alternative lifestyle
In a few interviews, Jobs hinted at his early experience with the psychedelic drug LSD. Of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Jobs said: "I wish him the best, I really do. I just think he and Microsoft are a bit narrow. He'd be a broader guy if he had dropped acid once or gone off to an ashram when he was younger."

The connection has enough weight that Albert Hofmann, the Swiss scientist who first synthesized (and took) LSD, appealed to Jobs for funding for research about the drug's therapeutic use.

In a book interview, Jobs called his experience with the drug "one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." As Jobs himself has suggested, LSD may have contributed to the "think different" approach that still puts Apple's designs a head above the competition.

Jobs will forever be a visionary, and his personal life also reflects the forward-thinking, alternative approach that vaulted Apple to success. During a trip to India, Jobs visited a well-known ashram and returned to the U.S. as a Zen Buddhist.

Jobs was also a pescetarian who didn't consume most animal products, and didn't eat meat other than fish. A strong believer in Eastern medicine, he sought to treat his own cancer through alternative approaches and specialized diets before reluctantly seeking his first surgery for a cancerous tumor in 2004.

9. His fortune
As the CEO of the world's most valuable brand, Jobs pulled in a comically low annual salary of just $1. While the gesture isn't unheard of in the corporate world — Google's Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt all pocketed the same 100 penny salary annually — Jobs has kept his salary at $1 since 1997, the year he became Apple's lead executive. Of his salary, Jobs joked in 2007: "I get 50 cents a year for showing up, and the other 50 cents is based on my performance."

In early 2011, Jobs owned 5.5 million shares of Apple. After his death, Apple shares were valued at $377.64 — a roughly 43-fold growth in valuation over the last 10 years that shows no signs of slowing down.

He may only have taken in a single dollar per year, but Jobs leaves behind a vast fortune. The largest chunk of that wealth is the roughly $7 billion from the sale of Pixar to Disney in 2006. In 2011, with an estimated net worth of $8.3 billion, he was the 110th richest person in the world, according to Forbes. If Jobs hadn't sold his shares upon leaving Apple in 1985 (before returning to the company in 1996), he would be the world's fifth richest individual.

While there's no word yet on plans for his estate, Jobs leaves behind three children from his marriage to Laurene Jobs (Reed, Erin, and Eve), as well as his first daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs.

Scientists use inkjet printing to produce solar cells 3 Jul 2011 5:22 PM (14 years ago)

The team used a similar approach to
printing photos with an inkjet printer
Solar energy may soon become easier to capture, say researchers who have developed a novel method to produce solar cells using inkjet printing.

Oregon State University researchers have come up with a technology similar to that commonly used to print documents and photos.

They say their method is quicker and less expensive than traditional solar cell manufacturing techniques.

It could also reduce raw material waste by 90%, they add.

As people move away from conventional combustion-type technologies, more attention is paid to renewable energy types, and solar energy is one of them.

It is known as a clean and sustainable form of energy, but this is offset by the manufacture of solar panels which is an expensive and complicated process.

Finding a balance between costs of production and efficiency could become key to future manufacture of solar cells, and many scientists around the world have been concentrating on developing new materials and methods to do that.

The recent inkjet approach is one of those novel methods.

"This is very promising and could be an important new technology to add to the solar energy field," said Professor Chih-hung Chang, the lead author of the study, which appeared in Solar Energy Materials and Solar Cells journal.

"Solar energy is the most abundant and clean energy source on Earth.

"Considering the high price of petroleum and other fossil fuels, solar cells will definitely have a bright future."

Manny Pacquiao to promote HP's new TouchPad Tablet 4 May 2011 6:26 PM (14 years ago)

Manny Pacquiao scores first global endorsement deal, named first House billionaire

(SPOT.ph) Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has been tapped to promote HP's new TouchPad tablet, his first global endorsement deal, Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank told Manila Standard Today. According to the report, neither Top Rank nor HP divulged how much the deal was worth, but the website Campaign Singapore estimated it to be worth US$1 million per year.

Top Rank said they submitted Pacquiao's name to HP, who was looking for an endorser for its TouchPad tablet, reports Manila Standard Today. Pacquiao's campaign will include HP laptops, printers, smart phones and other products.

Campaign Singapore wrote, "Confusion surrounding Pacquiao's representation had left many international brands reluctant to sign the boxing superstar, despite his multi-million-dollar appeal and fanatical fan base... But because Pacquiao's sponsorship deals tended to be domestic within his native Philippines, he was free to embark (on) the HP deal."

Pacquiao has also signed a three-year contract to endorse Texas-based State Street Produce, a company that supplies restaurants in the US, reports Manila Standard Today. The trade name "Pacquiao's Produce" will be featured in advertisements, produce boxes, delivery trucks and more.

One of ESPN The Magazine's Best Paid Athletes of 2010, Pacquiao has also been named the first billionaire in the House of Representatives, reports Inquirer.net. Ricardo Bering, chief of the House records division, said yesterday that the Sarangani congressman reported a net worth of over P1 billion in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.

Apple said Wednesday that white iPhone 4s can be bought through Apple's online store starting Thursday or at Apple stores and authorized retailers.

Apple sold 18.65 million iPhones last quarter, up 113 percent over a year ago.

Honda halves Philippine output after Japan quake 16 Apr 2011 1:01 AM (14 years ago)

MANILA, Philippines – Japan's Honda Motor Co. said Tuesday it was cutting April output by half at its Philippine assembly plant due to parts shortages caused by the massive March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

"HCPI [Honda Cars Philippines Inc.] is temporarily reducing 50 percent of its production volume from April 2011," the Philippine unit said in a statement that cited reduced supplies of imported parts.

The subsidiary did not say how this would translate in terms of numbers of vehicles assembled.

"Honda will closely monitor the situation and strive to resume normal production operations the soonest," it said.

Honda markets the Civic, Accord and CR-V models in the Philippines along with two sub-compact cars. As a whole, the Southeast Asian country had total vehicle sales of nearly 168,500 last year, according to industry data.

Honda is one of several carmakers to feel the ripple effects of Japan's worst natural disaster in nearly a century, which has disrupted an array of industries worldwide.
