The Best Gifts for 40-Year-Old Women (Even the Most High-Maintenance One) 12:37 PM (3 hours ago)

If you’re shopping for a 40-year-old woman – whether it’s your best friend, sister, or yourself – you already know she’s probably not easy to impress. By this age, we know what we like, appreciate quality over quantity, and we aren’t afraid to buy ourselves what we want.

So if you’re looking for the perfect gift for a woman who has impeccable taste (and maybe a little high-maintenance energy), I rounded up the best options at every price point, from luxurious splurges to thoughtful under $50 finds.

My friends and family would tell you that I’m very hard to shop for but I can tell you that’d be excited to receive anything on this list.

I HIGHLY recommend shopping early this year to make sure you can get gifts under the tree in time. I also love to shop early every year so that I can enjoy it so much more and can focus more on enjoying the holiday season once it arrives. And many of the gifts below may be discounted this week for Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which is another great reason to place your orders sooner rather than later!

Best Gifts for Women

Top 3 Picks

If you’re short on time or overwhelmed by choices, start here. These are the three gifts that any 40-something woman will love, no matter her personality or lifestyle.

1. Jenni Kayne Anything

If she doesn’t already own something from Jenni Kayne, this is your sign. The Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan or Shearling Moroccan Slippers are classics for a reason. I own two things from there – slippers and a sweater – and they are next-level luxurious.

2. Mejuri Jewelry

Minimal, timeless, and high quality without the designer markup. Mejuri’s gold hoops, dainty necklaces, and stackable rings make for the perfect “treat yourself” or “treat her” moment. Try the Sapphire Huggies for classics she’ll love, or the Satellite Necklace for something stackable or striking on its own. More of my Mejuri favorites are rounded up here.

3. A Classic Purse

A leather crossbody or structured tote makes a great gift she’ll use for years, and if you get a unique shape, it may be one she doesn’t already have (Cuyana and Sezane make great options). Choose a neutral color like taupe, ivory, or cognac for timeless appeal.

Luxury Gifts

If you’re celebrating a milestone birthday or simply want to go big, these gifts deliver on elegance and indulgence.

Under $200

These mid-range gifts hit the sweet spot – high quality, thoughtful, and indulgent without being over the top.

Under $50

Affordable doesn’t have to mean boring. These thoughtful small gifts are perfect for friends, teachers, sisters, or stocking stuffers.

Home

If your favorite woman is the person always curating her house or re-styling her bookshelves, give her another option to add to the mix. It can feel overwhelming to gift home items to the woman who love decorating, but it doesn’t have to be. Just make it elevated and unique vs. cheap and standard.

Beauty

By 40, she knows what works, and she’s likely serious about skincare. These gifts don’t require her to give up her favorite serum, but elevate a routine she already has.

Jewelry

Jewelry always feels personal, but it doesn’t have to be predictable. Mix classic and statement pieces to match her style.

Final Thoughts

If you’re still unsure what to choose, go back to the top three picks, because every woman loves some Jenni Kayne, timeless jewelry, and a beautiful bag.

Tommy’s Favorite Loungewear 20 Oct 1:27 PM (yesterday, 1:27 pm)

There’s a time and a place for your old college sweats, but let’s be honest, they’ve seen better days. Whether your husband works from home, lounges on the couch after golf, or travels frequently, it’s time to elevate his off-duty wardrobe. The best loungewear is comfortable but polished. It should be soft enough for Sunday lounging, but put-together enough that he can run to school drop-off if necessary.

Considering Tommy spends his life in Duck Head (reviewed here) or Holderness & Bourne (review coming soon), he definitely prefers a more dressed-up wardrobe. And these loungewear brands all get his stamp of approval since they have premium fabrics, great fit, and timeless style.

The Best Loungewear for Men

Thomas Hill Boxers

Thomas Hill only makes one thing – boxers – but they do it exceptionally well. My husband doesn’t wear them under clothes, but instead he uses them purely as loungewear or for sleeping.

They’re made from high-quality fabrics that are incredibly soft and breathable, with a fit that’s miles beyond the usual baggy cotton shorts. They look and feel polished enough that he can wear them around the house without looking sloppy.

If your guy likes to hang out in boxers at home and you’d rather he do it in a pair that looks as nice as an Oxford shirt, Thomas Hill boxers are the perfect upgrade. They’re understated, well-made, and just structured enough not to look like he’s in his underwear in the driveway when he’s helping me rush out the door, buckling kids into carseats. (Speaking from experience here.)

Bonus: These make great gifts. Every man appreciates comfort, but when it’s done this well, it feels like a luxury. (See more gift ideas for guys here.)

Vuori

Vuori has earned a loyal following for good reason. Their signature DreamKnit fabric is unbelievably soft and lightweight. Think athleisure meets luxury lounge. The Ponto Performance Pant and Sunday Performance Jogger are Tommy’s favorites. They look sleek, hold their shape, and pair perfectly with the brand’s Strato Tech Tees or Ponto Performance Crewnecks for layering.

What I love about Vuori is how easily it transitions from lounging to life. He can wear it for travel days or weekend errands without ever looking sloppy. (Not that he’d ever leave the house looking sloppy – it’s not his style.) If your guy tends to overheat or dislikes heavy sweats, Vuori is worth every penny. Plus, everything washes beautifully with no pilling or stretching out.

Holderness & Bourne

Known for their golf apparel, Holderness & Bourne also makes some of the best loungewear-adjacent pieces out there. Tommy has the Wallace Hoodie Sweater in three colors because he loves it so much. (He has described it as a warm hug on a cold day. Seriously.) Their Jackson Pullover and Lawson Hoodie are also ideal for layering.

Their performance quarter-zips are a particular favorite in our house. Tommy wears them year-round, whether he’s heading to the course, working from home, or just relaxing after dinner. They have a polished fit that looks tailored but never tight, and the fabrics are breathable with just the right amount of stretch.

If your husband likes golf or appreciates good quality, Holderness & Bourne is THE definition of quiet luxury.

LAKE

LAKE is known for their women’s pajamas (I live in mine), but their men’s line deserves just as much love. The Men’s Pima Sleep Set is insanely soft, made from Peruvian Pima cotton that gets better with every wash. They’re crisp, tailored, and refined and definitely not your typical flannel PJs. The Bamboo Lounge Set is also unreal in its softness and made with moisture-wicking bamboo. It’s a little more wearable outside the home than the Pima set.

I’ve gifted Tommy a pair of LAKE pajamas every Christmas, and they’re still his go-to for cozy nights at home. I’ve also gifted them to my brother-in-law, who loves them. Size up (and if you want to treat yourself to a pair too, read my LAKE review with sizing tips.)

Faherty

Faherty is kind of surf-luxe…think California casual. Their pieces feel more relaxed than others on this list so they’re great for guys who prefer a more casual look. While surf-luxe is absolutely nothing like my husband’s style, he still loves their pieces since they’re incredibly soft and fit well.

The High Standard Fleece Hoodie has its name for a reason. It’s buttery soft, warm, and fits like a dream. Pair it with the High Standard Fleece Sweatpant for a set.

Faherty’s fabrics always have that worn-in softness right out of the box, and the colors (like muted blues, heathers, and earthy neutrals) are timeless.

If your guy likes pieces that feel a little more “vacation mode” but still pulled together, Faherty is the one.

Quince

For men who appreciate high quality without the luxury price tag, Quince delivers. Their SuperSoft Fleece Joggers and Organic Cotton Tees rival brands twice the price, and their Mongolian Cashmere Sweatshirt is a great option if your guy prefers a more dressed-up loungewear look like my husband.

The fabrics are sustainable, the cuts are classic, and the brand is transparent about production costs. Quince makes it affordable to build a loungewear wardrobe with elevated basics that still fit a practical budget.

If you’re curating a capsule of essentials, start with their cashmere hoodie and French terry joggers. Pair them with sneakers, and he’s good to manage school drop off while you stay home and drink coffee.

Beautycounter is Back {Now Counter}: What You Need to Know the Relaunch 17 Oct 11:36 AM (4 days ago)

If you’ve been wondering what happened to Beautycounter after they unexpectedly shut down last year, they’re back, but now simply called Counter. After stepping away from the market last year, the brand relaunched on June 25, 2025 with a curated lineup of 20-ish products, focused on their bestsellers and clean beauty essentials.

What’s Back in Stock

I’ll walk you through the full 20-product lineup and what each product is, and which skin type it’s designed for.

Counterglow (formerly Countermatch)

Countertime (anti-aging focus)

Brightening & Exfoliating

Makeup Favorites

“Vintage Clean”

These are products in old packaging that they’re still selling through; all of these are marked as FINAL SALE.

How to Shop

You can shop the full Counter line here. Counter ships primarily via their website – no Amazon, Ulta, or Target partnerships this time around – and currently offers free shipping on orders over $50. You can also purchase a few Counter products from Goop. They also have a simpler loyalty program (that’s free) vs. the former Band of Beauty. You’ll earn a $15 product credit for every $200 spent, along with special birthday perks.

My Favorite Counter Products That Returned

While I’ve moved away from using most of Counter’s products (more on that below), I was excited to see some of my old favorites make the cut to return.

Why I’m Not Using Counter Anymore

Even though I still appreciate what Counter stands for – clean, safer beauty – I’ve personally moved on to other brands. I LOVE my current skincare routine, and for me, it came down to a few things:

That said, if you’ve been missing Beautycounter, at least there are some options available. And, there are some “vintage clean” (The old Beautycounter backstock) products that are still available.

What about all the other products?

They will be rolling out more over time, but the plan is to keep the lineup simpler and tighter.  I don’t believe they’ll re-launch some of the more niche products, like men’s lines, or shampoo and conditioner.

Bottom line: I’m glad Counter is back for those who loved their products, but for my own skin and routine, I’ve moved in a different direction. Still, if Countertime or the Overnight Resurfacing Peel were your holy grails, now’s your chance to stock up again.

Not-Sponsored NEIWAI Bra Review (and which bra is best for you) 17 Oct 7:10 AM (4 days ago)

As someone who is really quite picky when it comes to my undergarments, I was a little skeptical about how comfortable Neiwai bras would be. But I’ve now worn almost exclusively Neiwai bras for over two years, including while pregnant and now while breastfeeding.

I’m sharing a detailed review on each of the bras I own below, but here’s the short story: NEIWAI bras are literally the most comfortable bras I have ever put on my body.

NEIWAI Bra Review + Sizing Tips for small & large chest sizes

NEIWAI makes a lot of bras and other undergarments, but I’ve only tried five of them. I did my best to list them in order of my preference, but it was hard since I liked them all for different reasons. So, here are my thoughts on each:

My #1 Pick: Barely Zero Spaghetti Strap Wireless Bra – works for almost all chest sizes

The Barely Zero Spaghetti Strap Wireless Bra is the one that will work for almost everyone. I wore this when I was a B cup pre-pregnancy, and I’m still wearing it while I’m breastfeeding and an E cup. It gives great shape and is insanely comfortable, even with my larger chest size. My breast tissue doesn’t entirely fit in this but enough does that it works just fine.

All of the bras in the Barely Zero line are made with a very interesting (and seriously comfortable) material that adapts to your body and fits comfortably all day. I forget I’m even wearing a bra when I have this material on. Like all Neiwai bras, this is wireless.

It’s breathable & moisture-wicking with a pullover style and removable padding. It doesn’t give quite as much lift as the T-Shirt bra (next on the list), but it’s just as comfortable. It’s not cut as low as some other options and will show with certain necklines, but it’s a great option for most outfits.

Barely Zero Fixed Cup Wavy Bra – works for almost all chest sizes

The Neiwai Barely Zero Fixed Cup Bra is my second favorite option. It’s designed to shape and support your breasts with fixed cups and a low profile silhouette. It’s very similar to the t-shirt bra they used to carry that I loved so much. It has a classic t-shirt-friendly bra cut, and the straps are adjustable.

This may not be the sexiest bra they make, but wow, it is comfortable and practical for day-to-day use. It works really well underneath slim-fitted shirts. Above the cups in the bra is a little piece of fabric that helps the cups lay flat against your body, which just makes the fit SO good.

Since this comes in three sizes, it will work for more chest sizes than the one above, but I love that both the Spaghetti Strap one and the fixed cup bra have the pullover style, which is so comfortable.

Pure Comfort Ribbed Plunge Bra – best for small to medium chests

The Pure Comfort Ribbed Plunge Bra is popular, for good reason. It’s made of a super luxe cotton blend and the cups are extra thin (and wireless, of course). It’s not as supportive as some of their other bras, but it’s a really comfortable option.

The straps are adjustable and can actually be converted into a racerback style. This may actually be my top pick right now because it’s so beautiful and it’s incredibly comfortable, but the material is slightly thicker so it’s PERFECT under thicker tops or sweaters (not as great under a slim-fit tee in the warmer weather). It’s honestly just so flattering and tastefully sexy. I loved this when I was a 32 B/C but it doesn’t work for me now that I’m closer to a 34 DD/E.

Essential Support Bandeau Bra – best wireless strapless bra

I am always on the hunt for a great strapless bra, and this hits the mark. I’m pretty loyal to my SOMA Enbliss Wireless strapless bra, but the Neiwai Essential Support Bandeau Bra is equally as good and perhaps better for larger chests. It’s their best-selling strapless option with an anti-slip silicon band. Like the rest of the bras in this post, it’s wireless, and it does come with straps that you can remove. It provides great shape and lift.

I find that most strapless bras that I’ve worn have not had quite enough coverage, but this one holds everything in and there is no spillage. This style comes in traditional band and cup sizes.

3D Smile Support Cutout Bra – best for small chests

Next is the 3D Smile Support Cutout Bra. This is the lightest/coolest fabric of the ones I tried. The 3D Smile Cutout bra gives pretty generous coverage and lift with a flattering silhouette. The only catch with this bra is that it’s made for smaller chests so it wasn’t the best fitting option on me (and obviously doesn’t work currently) but still such a comfortable fabric. If you have a smaller bust, I’d imagine you’d really like this.

The 3D Smile Support Technology used in for this bra is what provides the support you want without feeling like you’re being squeezed. It also has a cutout in the front and high-ventilation mesh inside chest pads to keep you breezy and comfortable.

Alright, let’s get into some FAQs!

How to wash your NEIWAI bra?

Like all bras, you should hand-wash your NEIWAI bras in cold water with gentle detergent. I throw mine in the washer, if I’m honest, but I do place them in a mesh laundry bag and use the hand-wash cycle. I NEVER put them in the dryer, however. So, I lay them flat or hang dry them with this small space laundry rack.

What is NEIWAI’s return policy?

They accept returns and exchanges within 30 days of your purchase. For obvious reasons, they don’t accept returns on their briefs. They’re known for having great customer service, and they promise customer satisfaction. You can email them at any time with questions or concerns at hello@neiwai.life.

How do you pronounce NEIWAI?

This was the first thing I googled when I heard about this brand! The answer is “nay-why”. The word means “inside and outside” which was NEIWAI’s goal when they created their brand and products. They blend aesthetics and functionality, which is my overall goal with fashion too. I always want to feel as good as I look, and Neiwai has done great job with this, in terms of undergarments.

Is NEIWAI ethical?

Yes! They have a strong initiative to reduce packaging waste, but they are also very conscientious when sourcing the fabrics they use. They only use high quality, eco-friendly materials from suppliers like PrimaLoft®, VITA, and Carbon Zero by TENCEL™.

Additionally, NEIWAI only partners with manufacturers that meet the international standards in providing a fair wage for their employees and safe working conditions. AND, most of their packaging is recyclable.

Is NEIWAI worth it?

100% yes. These bras are some of the most comfortable undergarments I’ve tried. And as someone who’s breastfeeding, I’m always looking for comfort. Since NEIWAI is female-founded, you can feel confident that the person designing these bras knows what she’s doing. I think of NEIWAI as my lounging or everyday bras. Would I wear them to a gala or cocktail party? Probably not. But I would (and do, when I have the right size) wear them daily in my everyday life. I love how comfortable, smooth and soft each bra is, and I appreciate that they are all wireless.

Neiwai loungewear is amazing too – and deserves it’s own review. This brand really knocked it out of the park.

What to wear running in the cold – outfits & gear for every temperature 17 Oct 4:50 AM (4 days ago)

When you’re a new runner and wondering what to wear running, it’s more straightforward. But when you’re wondering what to wear running in the cold, it’s a little trickier. And cold weather can derail your training if you’re not prepared.

I actually really love running in cold weather. The air is so refreshing, and I think it helps de-puff my eyes when I don’t sleep well. But I used to overdress for almost every run, and after a few years of trial and error, I figured out a pretty good routine for cold-weather runs. While it’s sometimes hard to get out the door, I love it once I do. (And I much prefer winter running over running in the heat.)

Dressing the right way will make or break your run, and when you’re mixing freezing temps with sweat, you have to be careful. I’ve been running for over 20 years, and I’ve raced in some pretty tricky conditions (like the 2018 Boston Marathon).

Today I’m sharing what exactly I wear for running in the cold. (If you need help picking shoes, you can see my favorite running shoes here. And I rounded up my favorite supportive sports bras here.)

woman resting and sharing what to wear running in the cold

What to wear running in the cold

I don’t have to deal with snow very often in North Carolina, but it does get very cold at times. When I lived in Utah, I had to be more careful about running in the snow, but at least I didn’t have to contend with the humid cold like we get in the South. But cold is cold is cold! And it’s important to dress appropriately for it so you enjoy your runs more (and stay safe!)

Below are the general guidelines I use when getting dressed for cold-weather runs. Some factors will change what I decide to wear on cold days, including rain, wind chill, “feels like” temperatures, the type of run I’m doing, and just how I’m feeling (some days I like to be warmer than others!). The right gear makes ALL the difference! I linked my favorite brands for cold weather running clothes below in each section to make shopping easier.

Types of layers:

Base layers are typically thinner and fit close to the body to help keep in warmth. For cold runs, I wear a long sleeve like this Rest Less Pullover Top from Lululemon. When it starts to warm up, I’ll wear a short sleeve shirt or tank with a layer on top (usually the same top as above, the Rest Less Pullover), and then I’ll have the option to shed a layer.

A mid-weight layer is usually a thicker, looser material that can be layered more easily and often has weather-proofing materials (e.g., water resistance). A 1/2 zip is a good mid-layer. I love the Dash 1/2 zip from Brooks.

A running jacket or vest doesn’t necessarily have to be heavy to be warm (this lightweight Patagonia option is amazing), and a zipper (or even a half-zip) is nice since it’s easier to get on over two layers and unzip if you get a little too warm. My very favorite cold weather layer is the Down For It All vest from Lululemon, and if it’s really cold, I love the Lululemon Cross Chill Jacket.

When I’m on the fence, I always take running gloves (pro tip: get a bright-colored pair like the Fast and Free Fleece Running Gloves from Lululemon so you don’t lose them) and an ear band since they’re easy to take off and carry if I get too hot. I need a new one and I’m considering the Fast and Free Fleece Running Ear Warmer from Lululemon.

When you’re buying running clothes, it’s especially important to make sure the materials are moisture-wicking.

Do not wear cotton! Athletic apparel made with technical fabrics is worth the additional cost over an old t-shirt because it is made to wick away sweat from your body which helps you stay warm. And if your clothes aren’t breathable, your body heat will rise, and the heat will have nowhere to go. The worst thing you can do is run in the cold in very damp clothes! Think about it – would you want to go outside in a wet shirt when it’s 20 degrees? No way! So make sure you buy gear that’s sweat-wicking. Brands make this really clear since it’s such a selling point for runners. You can find all of my favorite sports bras for runners here on the blog, since your sports bra wicks sweat that keeps you warm and dry.

Okay, here’s what I wear for each temperature. Keep in mind that humidity and the wind will change what a temperature actually feels like, and a lot of this is a matter of personal preference. It may take some trial and error. If you’re always hot on a run, a good rule of thumb is to remove a layer before you go out. If you’re usually cold, add a layer and definitely take gloves and an earband! Just keep your body temperature at the forefront of your mind when you get dressed.

A few tips for running in cold weather

Keep your core warm

Some people prefer to be colder on their legs vs. their upper body. I’d much rather have cold legs than a cold torso or arms, so I factor that in with my winter running outfit. Figure out what works best for you and adjust accordingly.  However, a good rule of thumb is to make sure your core is dressed a bit warmer than your legs since that will help keep the rest of you warm.

Wear a vest

These Lululemon running vests are super helpful at keeping your core warm without making you feel restricted in a jacket or causing you to overheat. If you don’t have a vest, try layering a tank top under your base layer. It helps to have that extra layer on your core! I love it so much I got a similar one in another color.

TeriLyn Adams running and wearing vest - running attire cold weather

Prioritize extremities

Protect your head, ears, fingers and toes!!

A lot of heat is lost through your head, so when in doubt, wear a beanie. You can always remove it. If it’s not too cold, you could wear an ear band instead to keep just your ears warm.

I rarely get cold toes. I do wear slightly thicker socks in the winter, but I don’t buy anything special. But I know some people do get VERY cold toes so they buy extra thick socks for the winter or layer two pairs. I recommend merino wool socks if your toes are always cold. BTW, make sure you’re wearing true running socks since they help prevent blisters!

However, my fingers do get VERY cold, so cold that it makes me nervous at times! So I always take extra caution make sure they’re warm enough. Sometimes I even wear thick Gore Tex ski gloves over my thin running gloves or put hand warmers in my mittens.

Deal with ice – safely

Some people will use traction cleats, spikes or ice grips on the bottom of their shoes. YakTrax is a popular brand. I’ve personally never tried them, but I know many people love them. They just attach to the bottom of your running shoe so if you have a lot of icy days (or snow that gets compacted and becomes icy), you may want to consider this. We don’t deal with too many icy days in North Carolina, thankfully!

If you’re driving to a run on a treadmill because it’s too icy to run outside, again, please prioritize safety over getting in the miles!

A quick note about specific conditions (wind, rain, darkness):

Below are some great options for the different layers you’ll need for cold-weather running. I linked my favorite running gear underneath the scrolling images, where available. The great thing about nice gear is that it lasts forever. The bad thing is that I can’t always find the exact one online for you (like that turtleneck I’m wearing in the above picture, which is from Lululemon a few years ago).

The Best Gifts For New Moms (That They’ll Actually Love) 16 Oct 11:17 AM (5 days ago)

Becoming a new mom is an unforgettable experience (and the best thing I’ve ever done in life), but it’s also overwhelming. New moms are dealing with sleepless nights and hormone changes, and they’re also learning all about this new human that they just brought home. A thoughtful gift can be such a great way to show a new mom that you’re thinking of her.

If you’re searching for the perfect new mom present, I’ve pulled together a list with a handful of practical things and some indulgent finds just for her that will make any new mom feel appreciated and seen. We’re talking ideas from under $50 to totally splurge-worthy (think push-present ideas). Let’s get to it.

The Best Gifts For New Moms (That They’ll Actually Love)

If you’re looking for awesome gifts for new moms, you don’t have to spend a ton of money. Below are gift ideas at every price point from thoughtful, budget-friendly gifts to splurge-worthy gifts that spoil her.

Under $50

Snack Basket

Snacks were my lifeline during those early weeks with a newborn. I remember one friend brought me a snack basket of things that could be eaten one-handed. Having pre-cut fruit, granola bars, trail mix, lactation cookies, and dark chocolate within arm’s reach made such a difference, and I couldn’t get over how thoughtful it was of her to think about my being one-handed while holding my baby. You could add a water bottle and electrolytes to level up the basket; Owala is my favorite water bottle since it has a straw but can be chugged through an open mouth, too.

Read my blog post on LMNT Electrolytes here.

Coordinate a Meal Train

I can’t tell you how much a meal train helped me after my baby was born. Knowing that friends and family had signed up to bring meals on specific days took a huge weight off my shoulders. It was such a thoughtful gesture that reminded me how much support I had during that time. Bonus points if you take a home-cooked meal since takeout gets old fast! Give InKind is a great place to organize this. It has a ton of unique features, including a gift card Wallet where the mom can pool and swap their gift cards for whatever they need most at the time. Give InKind also allows you to set up a support schedule for things like dog walking, car rides to appointments, or anything else a new mom may need.

Do Tasks Around the House

Honestly, I don’t recommend offering to hold the baby unless mom knows that she needs to go take a shower or a nap, etc. Most moms want to hold their baby! (Many moms know that everyone wants to hold their baby, so they may offer it up– but don’t expect it and don’t ask).

Instead, offer to do all the other things so she can focus on snuggling– fold laundry, order groceries and put them away, empty the dishwasher, vacuum, pick up prescriptions, etc.! Again, Give InKind is a great place to organize this for a new mom!

Since I had complications post-delivery, one of my friends sat with me at the hospital and submitted a request for at-home lactation support. She even took care of all the insurance stuff they requested since my wallet was right there for her to grab my card. A year later, I still haven’t forgotten that she did that for me.

Take the Other Kids for a Playdate

As a mom of two, I’ll never forget the friends who offered to take my older one for a playdate or dinner. It gave me a chance to focus on my newborn and have a quiet house. Trust me, this gift is priceless for moms with older kids, especially those who don’t have grandparents in town to help. This one of the best new mom gifts you can give to a second or third-time mom!

Breastfeeding Essentials

Breastfeeding came with its own challenges, and having the right tools made all the difference for me. A set of nipple creams, silverettes, and a cozy nursing pillow were absolute game-changers. While I bought all of these myself, you could certainly gift them and say that they were your favorites while breastfeeding. Extras of anything never hurt, so don’t fret if they already have something! For more ideas, see my roundup of breastfeeding essentials.

Amazon Gift Card

It might not seem flashy, but an Amazon gift card is one of the most underrated gifts for a new mom. Those late nights spent nursing often turn into late nights shopping on your phone — whether it’s grabbing baby gear you didn’t realize you needed, ordering essentials you’re suddenly out of, or just treating yourself to something small. Having a little extra Amazon credit takes the pressure off and makes those 2 a.m. add-to-cart moments a little more guilt-free. Trust me, it will get used.

A Thoughtful Devotional

I recently learned about this book, To Light Their Way: A Collection of Prayers and Liturgies for Parents, and I think it’d be a great gift for a new or expecting mom. It’s full of prayers for specific things like a sibling who’s expecting a new baby, stressful mornings, the first day of school, feedings, and even prayers to pray while you’re on stroller walks.

Framebridge Gift

A framed photo is such a thoughtful, personal gift — and Framebridge makes it so easy. I actually received a Framebridge gift a few weeks ago, and the quality blew me away (although I shouldn’t have been surprised — I’ve purchased their frame ornaments for years for gifts for grandparents and love them!). You can even grab a picture straight from her Instagram. If she loved it enough to post it, she’ll definitely love having it framed and hanging in her home. Framebridge takes care of everything from printing to framing to delivery, so it’s a meaningful gift without the hassle.

Nice Pajamas or Loungewear

Comfort was everything for me as a new mom, and having soft, high-quality pajamas or loungewear made me feel put together even on the longest days. My favorites were made from breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo—perfect for lounging and nighttime feedings. Extras are definitely appreciated since the night sweats post-delivery are intense!! I often changed pajamas 3-4x a night. This DreamModal Kimono Three-Piece Set in Parisian Green Pencil Stripe from LAKE is the perfect gift for a new mom since the tank is made for nursing. LAKE also makes great sets that would work well as going-home outfits for mom.

I also have a blog post with a roundup of my favorite non-PJ loungewear that you can read here.

Ember Coffee Mug

I lost count of how many times I reheated the same cup of coffee. That’s why I loved my Ember coffee mug—it kept my drink at the perfect temperature for hours. It was such a small luxury that made a huge difference. This is one of my go-to new mom gifts.

Oso & Me Graham Blanket

The Oso & Me Graham Blanket is such a sweet, classic gift for a new mom (and baby!). I used ours daily for the first 6–7 months — it was perfect for stroller rides, tummy time, and just having a soft layer handy at all times. Now I keep it in the car as an on-the-go blanket, and it still gets so much use. It’s beautifully made, incredibly soft, and the perfect size. You can even have it monogrammed with the baby’s initials or name to make it extra special. It’s one of those gifts that’s both practical and sentimental — and one she’ll treasure for years.

LAKE Robe

I splurged on a LAKE robe after I had my first baby, and it was worth every penny. It’s both practical and luxurious. If she has a winter robe, get her the LAKE Cozy Robe. Moms with new babies in the warmer months will likely appreciate a Pima Cotton Robe more.

ChappyWrap Blanket

I have multiple ChappyWrap blankets, and they just get better with time. When your little one is tiny, it’s perfect for nursing sessions and contact naps — but as they grow, you’ll find even more uses for it. We bring ours to picnics and soccer games all the time. It shakes off dirt and leaves easily, so you can take it right back inside without dragging the outdoors with you. And if it gets spit up (or worse) on it, no big deal — you can just pop it in the wash. It’s one of those gifts that’s cozy, practical, and will get years of use.

DoorDash Gift Card

While we had dinner provided for multiple weeks, I struggled to get healthy lunches. So, having DoorDash gift cards so I could get lunch delivered was amazing! You can also have DoorDash delivered as a gift at any time, so feel free to send that new mom and dad some yummy dessert on a night that they may not expect it.

Spoil Them!

These options are a bit pricier, but I promise a new mom will love them.

Artipoppe Carrier

I wish I had gotten an Artipoppe carrier when my kids were little — I never did, and I definitely regret it. I actually just gifted one to my content manager, who’s due in a month, and had immediate envy when I saw it in person! The fabrics are gorgeous, it’s super supportive, and it’s way easier to adjust than most other carriers. It’s one of those rare baby items that’s both functional and beautiful — a splurge-worthy gift any new mom will use (and feel good wearing). It’s an especially great gift because it’s something she may have a hard time justifying buying herself, and most people won’t understand the hype (or the price point ). Be the person who spoils the new mom!

Jewelry

Jewelry is always a good idea — whether you want to go budget or all-out splurge. Victoria Emerson has beautiful, affordable pieces that still feel special (their wraps and cuffs are great everyday options). Mejuri and Susan Shaw are perfect mid-range picks — Mejuri for their sleek, minimal pieces, and Susan Shaw for classic, Southern-inspired styles. If you really want to go big, Ring Concierge makes stunning fine jewelry, including their famous diamond hoops that are truly stunning in person. No matter the price point, a pretty new piece of jewelry is a gift she’ll think of you every time she wears.

One of the sweetest gifts I received with my first was a delicate necklace with my baby’s initials. It was such a sentimental keepsake that I wear every day, and I was able to add another initial when I had my second baby. The exact necklace I have is the HART Studio Mama Initial necklace. You can add additional charms for additional children. This would make a super thoughtful gift for any mom– find my comprehensive list of unique gift ideas for moms here.

I also love the idea of gifting this Custom Birthstone Ring. If you know she’s done having kids, you could get the same amount of stones as she has children or something like that. Mine is so special to me!

Sleep Consultant

Sleep deprivation was one of the hardest parts of new parenthood for me. Gifting a session with a sleep consultant can be a game-changer. I wish I’d had this resource during those early weeks to help me and the baby establish healthy sleep habits. We love Molly from Sleep Shore. I believe code “terilyn” will give you a discount.

Postpartum Doula Hours

Having a postpartum doula was one of the best investments I made. She provided emotional and physical support when I needed it most, helping with breastfeeding, newborn care, and just being a calming presence. If you want to give a truly priceless gift, this is it. If you’re local, I could not recommend Margo from Born with Margo enough. If you’re looking for thoughtful postpartum gift ideas, I’ve put together a list of meaningful must-haves that any new mom would truly appreciate.

Jenni Kayne Slippers

I was gifted a pair of Jenni Kayne slippers one year for Christmas, and they quickly became my favorite thing. The soft lining made them incredibly comfortable, and the timeless design meant I felt stylish even when I was just lounging at home. They were exactly what I needed to feel pampered during those early days.

The Best Dresses for Family Photos (+ tips to pick your most flattering option) 15 Oct 11:57 AM (6 days ago)

Taking family photos can be such a nightmare, if I’m being totally honest. The pictures are usually great once you get them back since photographers can work some real magic. However, the actual session itself can be really challenging when kids aren’t interested in cooperating, the weather is too hot or too cold, or the outfits are uncomfortable. Thomas and Charles are the cutest kids alive (I may be biased), but taking photos with them is not without its challenges.

Best Dresses for Family Photos (and tips to pick your most flattering option)

While it can be difficult to navigate kids’ attitudes, I’d argue that the worst part of family photos is not wrangling your kids, but rather, finally getting the gallery back and not liking how you look in the pictures. After all the effort it took to get your family to smile in photos, not loving how you look in them is so discouraging.

One of the most asked questions I get on a regular basis is, “What should I wear for my upcoming family photos?” And as someone who poses for photos daily and shops for a living, I do think I’m a decent resource when it comes to this question. I’m also a mom to a very active almost-5-year-old who doesn’t love pictures and an almost 2-year-old as well. So, when I tell you I get it, I get it.

Thankfully, I’ve learned a few things over the last few years that help me make sure that I look and feel my best in our family pictures, regardless of how the rest of the evening goes. I’ve gotten one too many galleries back where I haven’t liked how I looked, including fall photos a couple of years ago! Now, I know what I do like to wear and what I don’t for family photos.

These pictures are a couple years old, but they are STILL my favorite family photos EVER. (Although, I was actually pretty thrilled with our family beach photos a few summers ago too!). We took photos with Charles this spring, and I love those as well, but they were for an ad and felt a little more “made up” than usual. I’m hopeful that we can schedule some family photos this fall!

Dresses for Fall Family Photos

I always opt for dresses for family photoshoots since they are the most forgiving and flattering. The last time I wore anything that wasn’t a dress in family photos was for our engagement photos over 8 years ago! So, today I’m sharing the pretty and practical dresses for fall family photos. While I have a bunch of cute dresses in my closet, not all of them work well for family photos.

A cute mini dress may be the perfect option for a date night with Tommy. However, it probably won’t look as good with a toddler on my hip. It wouldn’t look good while sitting in the grass outside or while chasing Thomas and Charles down throughout the evening. But a maxi dress will allow me to bend down to grab the boys. It’ll also allow me to sit in the grass without flashing anyone and still feels special.

Below, I’m going to share the things I think about when picking out a dress for family pictures and a handful of cute options I’m loving this season. I hope you find something that makes you feel beautiful AND allows you to function as a mom.

What to wear for fall family photos

Consider sleeve length and dress length

First, I wanted to share a couple tips about how I choose what I’m going to wear and show some examples of what worked vs. what I didn’t love.

Since having kids, I’ve learned that I prefer to wear a 3/4 sleeve for family photos. While I have toned arms, there are much more likely to be unflattering angles when wrangling a very active child when wearing cap sleeves or sleeveless options. Part of that is simply knowing what I find looks best on me and part of it is comfort.

Sleeves

If I do opt for a sleeveless or short-sleeved option, I’ll make sure the dress is on the longer side. For last year’s family fall photoshoot, I wore a gorgeous flutter-sleeved, knee length dress that I feel GREAT in for a night out, but I hated how it looked in the photoshoot. I was constantly worried about my booty hanging out and had to mess with the sleeves frequently, and I didn’t feel like it was a very flattering option once I got the photos back. Was it awful? No. Is it my favorite, and did I feel my best? Also no.

I think what I learned after wearing a short dress for my beach photos and loving it, was that I need to balance the top and bottom. If I go for a short dress, I want longer sleeves, like this dress below.

Woman taking a photo with her family

If I go for sleeveless or short sleeved, I want a longer dress, like I wore for Halloween a few years back.

So, when choosing your outfit, start to pay attention to how you feel in photos in various styles of dresses. A few weeks before photos, gather a few dresses and prop up your camera and take a bunch of photos in various dresses (I use the Lens Buddy app to auto snap photos – it’s easier than the phone camera timer). You’ll likely be able to tell how you FEEL in an option while pictures are being taken and be able to SEE how you look your best.

Shoes

This really depends on where you’re shooting the photos, the style of your dress and your personal preference. But I’ll share a few things to help you think through it.

If you’re taking photos on the beach, I’d go barefoot or wear simple sandals.

If you’re taking photos on grass, a trail or rocky area and really want to wear heels, bring a pair of flat sandals for walking in between locations and then slip your heels on when you get to each area. I did this for our maternity photoshoot and for both of our fall photoshoots and it worked well.

Since I’m so short (5’1″), I typically prefer heels, but I always bring two options and always choose a block heel option for easier walking and balance.

And if you’re wearing a very long dress that barely shows your feet, opt for a very neutral sandal so it will just kind of disappear.

Here are the shoes I wear most often for family photos:

Okay, now let’s get into some specific examples of dresses that I think would work well on most people!

Lyles Dress

I got this Lyles Dress in the bright red color from Tuckernuck last year. It’s hard to beat a maxi dress with a v-neck and removable tie waist. Anything that gives a dress a defined waist automatically makes it more flattering. While the red is definitely festive (and unfortunately unavailable), this dress also comes in a chambray blue and navy, which would be perfect for early fall. You can style this with flats, heels, or even boots.

If you’re pregnant, I think this would be gorgeous with a bump too!

Burnt Orange Floral Louisa Mini Dress

Next up is a mini dress (and some thoughts on why I’d still wear it!). Like I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I prefer to wear maxi dresses when possible for family photos since they are easier around kids and feel special and “dressed up”. However this short floral mini dress meets my other requirement: sleeves. I think it’s important to have one or the other, at least.

I absolutely LOVE the fall floral pattern with the brown background. The only think I’d be worried about for this dress is the length, since I know I’ll have to bend down, squat, and sit in the grass for our photos. For that reason, I’d be sure to wear these tan-ish biker shorts from Amazon underneath so that I wouldn’t have to stress about flashing any passers by. I’d style this dress with brown booties or tall boots and have the guys wear khaki and white.

Winetasting Mabel Maxi Dress

Effortless elegance meets mom practicality in the Winetasting Mabel Dress. This maxi has a wine-colored warmth and flattering drape, and the collared neckline is just perfect. The fit skims your body in the best way and flows beautifully with movement (which is obviously a plus if you’re chasing littles). It’s also the perfect option for anyone hoping to disguise a bump or their stomach. Pair with flats or a block heel.

Black & Tan Printed Floral Bennett Maxi Dress

This black & tan printed floral maxi dress is feminine and defined. The black and tan floral print is classy and seasonally tonal, perfect for harmonizing with richer family outfit palettes, so it would work in fall and winter. The print’s busy enough to disguise any unexpected (or expected) real-life toddler meltdowns and flatter your silhouette.

Hill House The Scarlett Nap Dress

If you want something festive without feeling fussy, the Hill House Scarlett Nap Dress in the tartan pattern is it. I wore it for our Christmas photos last year, and it walked the perfect line between classic and comfortable (aka: I could wrangle toddlers and still look put-together). It’s timeless, flattering on literally everyone, and gives that effortless “holiday heirloom” energy. You can’t beat the smocking either!

The SUE SARTOR Flounce Midi Dress

Another standout option for holiday photos is the SUE SARTOR Flounce in the Honey/Olive Mum print. It has that warm charm that never gets old, and is feminine without being overly precious. The colors are perfect for fall, but also read festive in a subtle, organic way (think earthy Christmas rather than glitter and bows), and the silhouette is forgiving in all the right places. It’s the kind of dress that photographs beautifully while still letting you breathe – if you’re a mom, you know that’s a win.

Tuckernuck Pomander Place Vivienne Dress

If you prefer a shorter dress for family photos, the Pomander Place Vivienne Sweater Dress is my top pick. I own this dress in three colors now. It’s cozy and structured all at once. The length keeps it playful, the fit keeps it chic, and it pairs perfectly with tall boots like these from Larroudé. It’s one of those no-fuss pieces you can throw on and still look dressed to the nines, which is exactly what you need on photo day.

The Thea Twofer Sweater Dress

When I saw this Thea Twofer Sweater dress, my immediate thought was that it would be perfect for fall family photos. There are so many things to love about it! The long sleeves are important to me because I tend to feel insecure about how my arms look in photos when I wear certain things. I like the idea of being able to grab the boys, throw them into the air, and hold them all without worrying about if my arms look ok (but there’s a GREAT sleeveless option if you feel differently). I also love the maxi length of this dress because it feels dressy and special. I’ve found that while a maxi dress may seem “fancier” than a mini dress, they are actually so much easier to wear around kids because you’re never overthinking when you have to bend down!

The colorway is another reason I love this maxi. The olive green is such a great fall option and easy to style with plenty of other colors for your family. I think I’d style this dress with nude heeled sandals or clogs

The Somerset Maxi Dress

Next is the Somerset Maxi Dress from Anthropologie. You have the best of both worlds with a fall patterned floral and a tiered maxi that still somehow feels cool enough to wear in the south for “fall” photos. I love that you could easily tie in greens or pinks or reds with the rest of the family. And you’d get a ton of use out of this dress for church, parent events for your kid’s school, or a date night. I’d even wear this to a wedding if it was not a super formal affair!

Pair this with black heeled sandals and you’re golden.

Amazon Prettygarden Flowy Maxi Dress

Don’t sleep on Amazon dresses (or fashion for that matter). You don’t have to break the bank when it comes to finding a dress you love and feel confident in. The Prettygarden maxi dress has the flattering and forgiving fit I love so much and always go for myself! It comes in many colors, ships quickly, is $50, and has the most darling, detailed fabric.

Amazon Ruffled Vintage A-Line Long Dress

This ruffled vintage A-line dress from Amazon is darling. I would wear the sleeves on my shoulders, but you could totally wear it off the shoulders if you prefer! The ruffle detail is such a fun addition to the dress, along with the subtle polka dots that add a playful, feminine feel to the overall look. Just under $40 and comes in all of the perfect fall and holiday colors.

Affordable Holiday Cocktail Dresses for New Year’s Eve & Christmas (under $200!) 14 Oct 12:30 PM (7 days ago)

I absolutely love holiday and NYE parties and having an excuse to get a fun dress!! Each year, I go through some of my favorite affordable retailers and try to round up the best affordable holiday cocktail dresses (since many of us don’t want to spend a ton on a dress we may only wear once or twice a year).

Everything in this haul is under $200, so you won’t break the bank when shopping for a holiday cocktail party this year. If you don’t mind spending a bit more, read this roundup of my favorite Tuckernuck dresses (I found a few holiday dress gems under $200 you’ll see below). They have some great cocktail options for NYE and the holidays. Or if you want to opt for something more casual than a dress, check out this round-up of Fair Isle sweaters for the holidays.

If you’re shopping for a work holiday party, here are office-appropriate holiday outfits.

If you’re pregnant over the holidays, like I was a couple of years ago, here are maternity-specific cocktail dresses for the holidays that I loved.

Affordable Holiday Cocktail Dresses for Christmas & New Year’s Eve

Alright, let’s get into the festive cocktail dress options!

Black Cocktail Dresses

Started strong with black or metallic cocktail dresses. Not only are these perfect for the holidays, but they also work well for NYE, which is already on my mind. If you’re shopping for a black dress, I recommend getting something that’s a little more fun with cutouts, an unusual hemline or neckline or with fun fabrics like velvet, lace, or sequins vs. just a plain black cocktail dress.

With black dresses, I prefer to wear fun shoes and red lips to make the look feel like more festive cocktail attire. These gorgeous jeweled pointy-toe heels would immediately make a simple black dress feel perfect for the holidays. I ordered them last year, and they’re amazing in person. And this is, hands down, the most flattering red lipstick ever (shade Four Hundred). It looks GOOD on everyone.

Little black dresses will serve you well for years to come so it’s worth the effort to find one you love.

Tuckernuck Black Velvet Elodie Dress

The black velvet dress from Tuckernuck I’m wearing below is classy, timeless, and festive. I love the flare at the bottom and the puff sleeves to balance out the fitted silhouette of the rest of the dress. Not to mention, it’s so comfortable, which is perfect if you’re holiday party involves lots of moving or dancing.

I love wearing it with kitten heels and delicate drop earrings. If you’re petite, consider heels with a pointed toe like these from Sam Edelman to elongate the leg.

Amazon Long Sleeve Velvet Ruffles Mini Dress

This Amazon long-sleeve velvet mini is such a classy, fun, and flirty holiday cocktail dress. The long sleeves balance the shorter hem, and the ruffle details add just enough playfulness. I’d throw on tights, black pumps, and a glittery clutch for a festive feel. A dress like this works all holiday long, whether it’s for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or the New Year!

If you prefer a sleeveless option, the Lulus Gorgeous Darling Black Velvet Sleeveless Mock Neck Mini Dress is pretty similar – just without the sleeves for a slightly more modern, polished look.

Both of these come in a handful of festive colors.

Pontee Plissé One-Shoulder Midi Dress

This midi-length Pontee Plissé One-Shoulder Dress is such a great option for NYE parties. Since I’m 40 years old, I tend to opt for midis more often than mini dresses (although for a cocktail party, it is fun to sport a short dress), so I was drawn to this dress. You could dress it up with colorful shoes or keep it sexy with black strappy shoes and some sparkly earrings. You could wear this dress for multiple occasions.

Tuckernuck Black Sequin Carmen Column Midi Dress

The Black Sequin Carmen Midi Dress is all about sleek sparkle. The column silhouette elongates the body, while the sequins catch the light without feeling over the top. Throw a silky shawl over your shoulders, and pair with simple black heels and dangly earrings for a night out.

It’s elegant enough for a work party but still feels celebratory. Here are more festive and professional holiday work party outfits.

Tuckernuck Black Embroidered Calla Dress

For a subtle statement, the Embroidered Calla Dress from Tuckernuck is so charming. The embroidery adds texture and interest without being flashy. Not to mention, the puffed sleeves are absolutely darling and give the perfect feminine flare. I’d pair it with my favorite black platform heels from Loeffler Randall and a small clutch, but you could also add bold earrings for a more playful look.

You can read about the best Loeffler Randall dupes I’ve found if you’re not quite ready to make the investment!

Captivating Figure Black Pearl Beaded Bow Strapless Mini Dress

This Captivating Figure Black Pearl Beaded Bow Strapless Mini Dress is the ideal NYE dress. If you’re busty, this might be a bit too revealing for you, but I think this dramatic beaded dress would be such a fun statement for those with smaller chests. The material is stretchy, which is best for a tight-fitting dress like this.

I’d stick to strappy heels with this dress.

How Much I Care Black Off-the-Shoulder Midi Dress

It’s hard to beat a traditional off-the-shoulder midi dress, especially in black. While this How Much I Care Black Off-the-Shoulder Midi Dress does lean a little more dressy than some shorter options, it would be great for a formal work dinner or nicer NYE party because of the length. I love the ruffled hemline and sweetheart neckline.

You could go black or metallic for shoes, but I think strappy with a narrow heel is definitely the way to go.

Sparkling Stunner Black Rhinestone Cutout Long Sleeve Mini Dress

When I was talking about making sure your black dress has some interest, this is what I meant. This Sparkling Stunner Black Rhinestone Cutout Long Sleeve Mini Dress has such a fun (i.e. dramatic and festive) back. The front is simple and flattering, and I love that you can see the start of the cutouts from the front. I’d stick to black shoes for this dress and really let the back shine.

If the rhinestones feel too flashy for you, this black long-sleeve mini dress has a cutout without any embellishments.

Red Cocktail Dresses

I find that the best holiday cocktail attire dresses are red. Don’t get me wrong, I also love a green or black dress, but something about red during the holidays feels extra festive. If you’re still shopping for Christmas cocktail dresses, look no further than this section.

Always For You Wine Red Puff Sleeve Mini Dress

The Always For You Wine Red Puff Sleeve Mini Dress is a tried-and-true holiday cocktail dress. I ordered it two years ago, and it was one of the most flattering options I discovered that year. The fit is true-to-size, and the texture of the dress adds some interest. I especially love that this dress has a conservative neckline, but it’s not boring.

I styled this dress with black heels, fun gold earrings, and a glittery clutch. This might be my favorite petite holiday dress (I’m 5’1″, so I’m always on the hunt for petite options).

Lulus Classic Elegance Wine Red Velvet Sleeveless Mock Neck Maxi Dress

Velvet plus a deep wine shade is a match made in heaven. The sleeveless mock neck on this velvet maxi is every bit as elegant as it is festive. This might be one of my favorite options for a Christmas cocktail dress.

Dive more into a chic look with black strappy heels and dangly diamond earrings. If it’s cold, a classic wrap or cropped coat works beautifully.

Here are some of my favorite winter coats (dressy and comfortable).

Essential Confidence Wine Red Velvet Mock Neck Jumpsuit

For anyone who wants a non-dress option, this red wine velvet jumpsuit is sophisticated, sexy, and stylish. The velvet fabric and mock neck lend a luxurious feel, while the wide-leg pants add comfort for movement and dancing, and give the jumpsuit a super flattering shape. The open back detail is my favorite detail – stunning.

Pointed-toe pumps and statement earrings are the perfect pairing for a festive and effortless look.

Green cocktail dresses

I love the dark green option for a holiday cocktail dress. It’s so simple to make festive – get a red mani, put on red lipstick, neutral heels and you’re good to go! Green works especially well for Christmas party dresses since green has become such an on-trend, popular color this year. I’ve also linked a cute jumpsuit below that would be quite the statement, as well as some fun mini dresses with beading.

Take a Glance Emerald Green Tiered Mock Neck Midi Dress

This color makes me SO happy! If you’re looking for a fun (yet modest) cocktail dress, this mock neck midi dress is perfect. It’s under $100, runs true-to-size, and can be worn with any heels. The bodice is a little large, so it’s perfect for large busts. Just be sure to steam it. I didn’t before I took these pics and it still pains me.

Exquisite Refinement Emerald Backless Bow Ruffled Maxi Dress

The Emerald Backless Bow Maxi Dress is a showstopper. The open back, oversized back bow, and ruffled details make it the most tasteful blend of sexy and elegant, which is the chef’s kiss of holiday cocktail attire. You will stand out in the best way. With this dress, I would wear ankle strap heels and statement earrings.

This dress also comes in black, which is a great choice if you want something more versatile.

Lulus Emerald Ruched Velvet Mock Neck Maxi Dress

The ruching on the velvet mock neck maxi from Lulus is so flattering, and the velvet fabric looks so luxe. The mock neck keeps it sophisticated while the fit hugs in all the right places.

Style this one with nude or black heels and gold hoops, and allow the dress to be the statement piece. If you’re attending an evening event, a soft updo will let the mock neck shine, and it will be a head turner for sure.

Amazon Cowl Neck Long Formal Dress

This Amazon cowl neck long dress is a budget-friendly option that feels much more expensive than it is. The draped cowl neckline adds softness, and the silhouette is forgiving but elegant.

Strappy heels and statement earrings would be the perfect pairing, or even a chic wrap if it’s chilly outside. It’s a great pick for both office parties and family gatherings.

Affordable Cocktail Dresses & Accessories

Lulu’s has a great selection of affordable cocktail and holiday dresses. Have a little fun and get something a bit bolder this year, maybe try some embellishments. A seasonal party is the perfect excuse.

For accessories, Baublebar has a great selection of affordable statement jewelry, and in my experience, fast shipping.

A couple of years ago, I tried on many dresses in this Holiday Cocktail YouTube video (many aren’t available anymore, but there are a few remaining stragglers) so you can see how they fit and move.

What is cocktail attire for a Christmas Party?

Typically, cocktail attire means a balance between formal and casual. It’s not quite as formal as a black tie event or a gala where you’d wear a gown, but it’s dressier than dinner with your girlfriends. Most retailers will categorize their dresses as “cocktail dresses” so just look for that.

For a cocktail party, men usually wear a suit and tie, and women wear a dress with heels. However, you can easily get away with wearing dressier boots with heels.

Happy holidays and have fun celebrating!

What Socks to Wear with Loafers (Do’s and Don’ts) 13 Oct 9:55 AM (8 days ago)

Wearing socks with loafers is one of those trends that’s easy to get wrong. The right socks (or lack thereof) can make your outfit look chic and fashionable, but the wrong socks can make an outfit look awkward or out of place. I’m a loafers girl through and through – I wear them at least weekly every single season. So today, I’m sharing some tips and tricks for styling loafers if you want to try wearing socks with them. (And here are more ways to style loafers without socks.)

Can You Wear Socks With Loafers?

Yes, you can wear socks with loafers.

There are a few reasons: first, socks + loafers are what I consider a timeless trend since it repeats every year but doesn’t ever go out of style. Pay attention to city style and you’ll notice tons of funky loafer + sock combinations. You can also search for socks and loafer outfit ideas on Pinterest to see how women have styled the two recently.

But more practically, socks add comfort, prevent odor, and protect your loafers from wear and tear. It’s actually kind of awesome that socks and loafers are considered fashionable when it’s genuinely a practical choice.

The key to styling socks and loafers together is choosing the right type of socks to match the occasion, your outfit, and the type of loafers you’re wearing. From sleek dress socks for a polished office look to casual crew socks for a preppy vibe, there are important factors to think through when picking out both pieces. And, of course, some outfits are best with a sockless look or no-show socks (also called loafer socks) for a clean look.

What Socks to Wear with Loafers (Do’s and Don’ts)

First, let’s talk about when you should try the socks + loafers look and when you should stick to a sockless option.

When to Wear Socks with Loafers

Formal or Professional Settings

Professional settings are a great time to pair socks with your loafers. Opt for dress socks when wearing trousers, suits, or blazers. Stick to neutrals like navy socks, black socks, or muted patterns. I recommend dark leather loafers like the Loraine Loafer from Sam Edelman or the Grayson Penny Loafer from Madewell for a setting like this.

Cooler Weather

Cold weather always calls for socks, including when you’re wearing loafers. In fall or winter, cotton or wool socks add warmth and prevent your feet from getting cold in leather loafers.

Casual Outfits

Casual outfits are my favorite way to style socks and loafers. Loafers with ankle socks or crew socks are great for a relaxed, preppy vibe. You can pair them with jeans, chinos, cotton pants, or even skirts.

When to Skip Socks with Loafers

Summer or Warm Weather

Wearing socks with loafers in the summer just feels wrong – and it looks strange, too. When the weather is warm, go for a sockless look for casual loafers (maybe these cute Italian Leather Horsebit Loafer in the Bone color). I also find that loafers made in natural materials – these penny loafers from Alexandre Birman are a good example – are ideal for summer outfits.

Ultra-Casual Settings

I also recommend going sockless when you’re wearing laid-back outfits like rolled-up jeans or shorts.

What Socks to Wear With Loafers

The sock you choose will make or break the loafer look. Here’s a breakdown of the best options for pairing with loafers:

Dress Socks

Dress socks are streamlined, thin, and breathable. They look best with professional outfits (think suit skirts, slacks, etc). Depending on what you’re wearing, you’ll want to choose a sock length that avoids showing skin in a professional setting – and opt for black socks, navy socks, or very subtle patterns.

No-Show Socks (Loafer Socks)

No-show loafer socks are great for casual or semi-casual outfits when the weather is warming up a bit. They give you a sockless look while protecting your feet and loafers from moisture and odor. I recommend Bombas Low-Cut No-Show Socks or Nordstrom’s Cotton Blend No-Show Socks, which come in a 3-pack.

Crew or Ankle Socks

Crew or ankle socks are great for casual preppy styles. This is the style I wear most often with jeans, trousers, and cotton pants. I love these Amazon ruffled ankle socks to add a feminine touch to my outfits. I usually stick to wearing my ruffle socks with brown loafers or even tassel loafers. These Madewell Grayson Penny Loafers are my top pick right now and are what I’m wearing below.

White Socks

White socks go without saying, but they’re perfect for almost all of these looks (except maybe for the professional setting when you want to stick to something darker and more subtle). I wear these Amazon white socks with my black loafers and brown loafers for a street style look.

How to Wear Dress Socks with Loafers

Here are some practical tips for styling your dress socks with loafers for a formal or business casual look:

1. Match Socks to Your Outfit: Choose neutral tones like navy, gray, or black to complement your trousers or suit.

2. Get the Right Length: Opt for tall socks to ensure no skin shows when you sit down.

3. Experiment with Subtle Patterns: If your outfit is understated, add a preppy twist with a subtle patterned sock. But be sure the pattern is truly subtle.

4. Choose the Right Fabric: Pair sleek leather loafers with high-quality wool dress socks in cooler months or lightweight cotton socks in the warmer months.

Sporting the “Sockless” Look

This style works best in summer or for ultra-casual occasions. Here are some tips for pulling off the sockless look with loafers:

1. Invest in No-Show Socks: No-show socks keep your feet (and shoes) fresh without showing. They’re great for preventing blisters or any hot spots on your feet while you wear loafers.

2. Stick to Casual Loafers: When I’m going sockless, I wear leather brown loafers, suede loafers, or tassel loafers. In the summer months, I opt for loafers made of natural materials.

3. Pair with Slim Pants: Roll up your jeans just slightly for a clean look.

Bonus Tip: Ditch the Athletic Socks

One of the biggest style faux pas when wearing loafers is pairing them with athletic socks. It looks accidental and unintentional, which can ruin the outfit. Here’s why to avoid wearing athletic socks with your loafers:

Too Thick: Athletic socks can bunch up and look too bulky with sleek loafers.

Casual Clashing: The sporty vibe of athletic socks rarely matches the refined aesthetic of loafers. However, there are some cases where a casual sock works well with a lug sole loafer.

Unflattering Look: Unless styled intentionally, white athletic socks with loafers can look out of place. Again, there’s a fine line!

For a better alternative, choose crew socks, no-show socks, or dress socks that enhance your outfit while keeping your loafers comfortable.

Final Thoughts

I hope these tips help you feel more confident if you try socks and loafers together for the first time!
