Why 2021’s Year of the Ox is exactly what we need after 2020 15 Jan 2021 9:40 PM (4 years ago)

2020 was Year of the Rat

If we had paid attention, we would have known we were in for a hellish year. Have a read of what Year of the Rat is all about:

Rats tend to lead a busy lifestyle running around from one place to the next. From the outside, this may look like absolute chaos but every move is actually very well calculated and has been thought out right down to the last detail. While these rats seem to be happy creatures, they are actually quite aggressive on the inside but tend to hide it very well.

YEAR OF THE RAT, KELLY’S STAR SIGNS

Except, they didn’t hide it very well. It was chaos. We were thrown into a pandemic washing machine and every time we saw a sliver of daylight, we got some ‘pain’ sprayed on us and thrown back into the wash. And we’re still not out of it yet.

But, with a new year, comes renewed hope for a safer, healthier (and cleaner) life ahead.

2021 is Year of the Ox

This year could be our ticket out of this circle of despair we’ve found ourselves in. Let me explain. But first, read this:

Oxen are seen as the big friendly giants of the Chinese zodiac thanks to their patient, hard-working and reliable nature. But don’t mistake the big friendly giant for a dim-witted one. Oxen are quite capable of being creative and thinking for themselves. Sure, it may take a little longer than most, but the thoughts and ideas themselves are well worth the wait.

YEAR OF THE OX, KELLY’S STAR SIGNS

If you can imagine for a second, a big, strong ox who has a goal of travelling far across the land, over mountains to a place where he knows there is plenty of food, water and shelter for him, that is us.

We have our goals of a better, healthier, safer life but our burden is huge. Financial stress, career instability, mental health challenges and social isolation to name a few. The Year of the Ox, tells us that we will have patience, we will be hard-working like never before and we will crave anything resembling reliability and stability in our lives.

Not only that, the Ox also guides us through this life they are calling the ‘new normal’. The world has changed and instead of trying to find a path back to where we came from, the Ox is telling us instead that we need to think creatively and find new solutions for how we will live from now on. What’s going to work for us? What’s not working? What needs to be done better?

We need to improvise, prioritise and innovate in all areas of our life.

And the Ox is going to give us all the space and time we need to do this properly. To ensure our changes are sustainable and dare I say, even better than before.

And on that note…

Here’s to the Year of the Ox and all that it represents for us in 2021. This year, is going to be the foundation on which we rebuild after 2020. So let’s think outside the box and get it right.

Pisces

Well you got a compassionate lover in Pisces. They look forward to fantasies and what is better than to fulfil some of them on this special day of love. To give them the best surprise, sweep them off their feet by sparking the romance between you two. An expensive gift will make them the happiest. Security and freedom are what they wish from you. Improve your relationship by solving these 4 challenges 4 Apr 2016 7:34 AM (9 years ago)

Having a thriving, happy relationship requires constant work from both of you. It requires you to give and take and it’s definitely a journey worth fighting for when it comes to the right person.

The little things that make us happy, like cooking your partner’s favourite dinner, breakfast in bed on a lazy Sunday morning, or offering a flower without a special occasion are the small gestures that go a long way. But every relationship has its ups and downs and learning how to manage the bumps on the road will eventually make your relationship stronger.

Let’s face it, it’s endearing when you see an elderly couple holding hands while they walk. It makes you want to stop and think “How did they do it”? Well, it’s not easy, but not impossible either. It requires patience, understanding and always remembering that your relationship is important.

So, here is some advice on how you can improve your relationship by working together to solve these 4 common challenges.

1. Communication

It seems easier said than done, but the truth is, communication is the key to a happy relationship. Considering our busy lives and distractions these days, sometimes it’s hard to find the time to simply open up to your loved one. Things start piling up and one day you end up shouting all the things you didn’t say in their right time.

What you really need to do is make an actual appointment with one another. Call it “Talking Sunday” if you will, and mark it on your calendar, because it’s important. Make sure there are no distractions around you, look into each other’s eyes, and things will come naturally. It may be awkward at first, but at least you’re taking some real steps to improving communication in your relationship.

Remember not to raise your voice and not to interrupt your partner. Listen carefully and show interest through your body language so the other one knows they’re being heard. Try to phrase everything in a positive way. For example, “I wish you would help more around the house, so we could have more time together” instead of “You never help with anything and I’m sick of feeling like I’m the housekeeper”.Remember: Happy thoughts!

2. Dividing home chores

Oh, that’s a tricky one, especially when both of you have full-time jobs. There’s simply no way of deciding who’s more tired and who has enough energy left to clean the house, and if you end up spending your weekend doing chores, that can’t be good for anyone. This can quickly escalate into a fight, especially if you get that standard answer of “I’ll do it tomorrow”. Yes, we know you need it today, not tomorrow.

What you need to do is create a list and mutually agree on who does what. Make sure you organize it well and stick it somewhere, like on the fridge, where you can both see it, at least in the beginning.

If you still can’t agree on this, then try searching for alternative solutions, like a cleaning service. After all, the time you’ll have together is priceless.

3. Conflict

Conflict is a part of life, and whether you like it or not, you and your partner need to learn how to deal with it in a healthy and productive manner. Think twice about what you’re going to say, and if your comments are blaming and hurtful, then it’s time to take a break.

Instead, try changing your arguing strategy. I know that sounds weird, but if you are used to jumping right in to defend yourself when your partner hasn’t finished talking, try to hold off and hear them out.

It’s also important to admit when you’re wrong and apologize. Remember that vanity has no place in a happy relationship, and you’ll be surprised how an apology can bring you closer after an argument.

4. Trust

Trust is the glue that keeps you together. It’s a key part of the relationship. If you and your partner have trust issues, you’ll need to learn to solve them with patience over time. Don’t lie to one another and try to be sensitive to what the other is feeling. Don’t discount how your partner is feeling, because it might cause them to feel like they can’t open up to you.

Always let the other one know what’s going on with you, where you are and call if you’re going to be home late. Never say things you can’t take back, especially if you don’t mean them, and don’t dig up old wounds.

Respect your partner’s boundaries, be a good listener, and always be there when the one you love needs you the most. Be each other’s cheerleaders and support teams.

Well, like I said, a happy relationship needs a lot of work, but at the end of the day, you know it’s worth it.

What problems do you struggle with every day and how do you manage to solve them?

Turn your dreams into a plan (the easy way) 1 Jan 2016 12:58 AM (9 years ago)

Happy New Year!

There’s something exciting about the new year that tells us: ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE (once again).

At some point during the year we get lost in the rhythm of our day-to-day lives and while we may be accomplishing things, it’s not always easy to find that excitement or buzz that comes with the beginning of a new year.  Afterall, a new year means a new beginning.  You think about things you’d like to change, what you don’t want to do any more, dream about all the things you’d like to accomplish and probably being healthier, stronger, thinner, happier and wealthier too!

However, these dreams are just dreams.  They won’t last unless you put a plan together. A solid one. One with actions.  Actions that are easy to follow.  Sound good? Well let’s get started then!

Step one – Have a clear vision

Don’t skip this step! Imagine yourself at the end of the year, once you’ve realised your dreams.  What do you look like? Where are you? Imagine what else has changed as a result of your dreams.  Hold tight to this image. It is the key difference between dreams staying dreams and dreams becoming a reality.

Step two – Make it a measurable goal

This usually means adding a value and a date to your goals.  For example: if your dream is to play the piano, your goal might be, to play 3 classical pieces of music by the end of the year.  Or if your dream is to be healthy, your goal might be, to eat three healthy meals and exercise for 1 hour every day for at least three months. Get specific.  And don’t forget to put a date on it.

Step three – Write it down

Now. Yes, now.  Open notepad and start typing away. Write down your measurable goals. Include details about your vision. Include why it’s important for you to do this. Elaborate as much as possible so that you have something powerful to read if at some point you feel you’re faltering.

Step four – Create simple actions

Look at your goals and write down a few simple actions that will get you started. For example: for the piano goal mentioned above, your first action might be to find and book an appointment with a piano teacher.  For the healthy goal, your first action might be to ‘donate’ any unhealthy food in the house and to buy ingredients for healthy meals you want to try.  Write down as many simple actions as you can think of now.  It will help you later on.

That’s all there is to turn your dreams into a plan.

I’d wish you luck, but luck has nothing to do with it.  Holding tight to your vision, having clear goals and simple actions does!

If you want to get started now, tell me what your dreams for 2016 are and the measurable goal that goes with it in the comments below.

Is your relationship built to last? 4 Apr 2015 1:27 AM (10 years ago)

People are always asking me if their relationship is built to last. It’s a tricky thing to answer especially when:

  1. I have never met either person
  2. I only have one side of the story to go by

There are certain things that I would look for in a relationship and since I spent 9 years with my husband before getting married, I’ve certainly asked myself if we were built to last during that time.

So here are a few things I would look out for to see if a relationship is built to last.

You always have each other’s best interests at heart

I don’t mean that you never put yourselves first, I mean that when the situation arises, you think only of your other half’s happiness and give unbiased advice that would ultimately make them happy.

You love each other’s quirks

I have a few quirks I’ll admit, but my husband has always embraced them and even poked fun at them in an affectionate type of way. Especially when I’m highly embarrassed after a quirk has reared its ugly head, he manages to let me know that I’m only human and we have a laugh about it.

You ‘get’ each other

Do you know what I mean? I know exactly what you mean!

When the going gets tough, you’re there for each other

This is probably the most important point to look out for. When life tests you, we all need that person who can listen, offer support and push us in the right direction again. Even better if that person happens to be your partner.

You can talk about a common interest

One thing I love about my relationship is that we can have the nerdiest, most interesting chats. There was a point when it seemed our common interests were dwindling, but as soon as I got involved in my husband’s current interest and vice-versa, it was game on after that! Suddenly we could talk for hours again.

You are great travel partners

We didn’t know this for quite a few years but when it came time for us to see the world, we were like a well oiled machine ticking off our to-see and to-do lists and had an absolute blast. I played navigator and photographer while my other half provided transport and came up with ideas and places to fuel our bellies. Whether it’s relaxing by the pool, eating (and drinking) your way through the countryside, hiking or snowboarding, most of the happy couples I know enjoy doing the same things together on vacation.

You don’t have to have compatible star signs

What?! That’s right! I’m a Leo married to a Capricorn (I’m not joking) and it’s working out pretty good for us!

Every relationship is so different. What works for me and my husband might not work for others!

What other things do you look for to see if your relationship is built to last?
