On a quick visit here amid tight security just a few hours after Greek lawmakers narrowly approved a new barrage of austerity measures, Germany’s finance minister on Thursday backed Greece’s efforts to revive its battered economy, saying the German government could provide financing for Greek businesses but ruling out a restructuring of the country’s huge debt burden.

More than three years into Greece’s depression-level crisis, the economy is still shrinking, but less quickly. Unemployment is still rising, but not as fast. The country’s leaders have proclaimed light at the end of a very long tunnel. And on a blooming preserve in northern Athens, dozens of unemployed professionals are learning how to farm, a skill they say will serve them well in good times and bad.

A new pipeline to bring gas to Europe from the Caspian Sea will go through Greece and then under the sea to Italy, it was confirmed Friday, a defeat for a rival project to bring gas through Bulgaria and into Austria.
