Happy New Year

Happy New Year!!!
I cannot believe that we are in 2014 already. 2013 went by in a bit of a blur for me, especially the last half, which was a difficult time for me. I am glad to be here in this bright, shiny, NEW year.
I am starting this year with a big January sale on my
website. From today until 10th January there is
25% off all my fabrics on the website. Just use code
NEWYEAR (in capitals) in the coupon code box to benefit from this discount.
I have also added lots of fabrics to the
clearance section so there are HUGE bargains to be had. Do go and take a look but don't delay as these are one-off unique pieces and once they are gone they are gone.
My fair dates for 2014 have now been added to this blog for you to take note of. There will be more and I will add them nearer the time.
In the meantime, here are some pretty fabrics that have been recently added to the website for you to look at.

Just a quick post to let you know that I am having a stall at the
Vintage and Handmade Spring Fair at the Town Hall in Chipping Sodbury tomorrow, Saturday 25th May 2013. We are open from 10am and close at 4pm. There is a £1 admission fee.
As well as myself there will be some wonderful sellers of vintage and handmade goods and of course the lovely town of Chipping Sodbury is well worth a visit.
Here is a quick peek at the stock I am bringing.
Lots of new fabrics, curtains, buttons, haberdashery, vintage quilt pieces, homeware, toys and a rail full of beautiful vintage clothes. I have packed some iconic pieces of fabric from Heal's and some great children's fabrics.
Hope to see you there x
Pinterest UK
9 May 2013 11:30 PM (12 years ago)
Today's post is about Pinterest. Pinterest UK has just been launched and when I was asked to be part of their Pin it Forward campaign, which you can read about here, I was more than happy to.
Some of you may already know about Pinterest and are happily using it but for those of you who don't know what Pinterest is all about let me tell you why, and how, I use it.
Pinterest is a tool for collecting and organizing things that you see and love when browsing the internet. Just like a scrap book or tear sheet, you can literally pin your favourite things, or images that inspire you, to virtual pin boards for you to keep safe. You create your own boards based on what interests you, such as food, fashion, decor, favourite places etc., and organise your pins accordingly. When you need to find them again they are safely there on your board. How many times have you seen something on the net and thought 'oooooh that's lovely' and then forgotten where you found it?
For example I have a board called
Vintage Fabric and Haberdashery (naturally!). I pin fabrics and haberdashery I have in my collection, fabric I would like to have, designs that inspire me, and also invite others to add pins to this board.
I pin my favourite
shoes and
clothes that I may buy later in the season.
You can also follow other pinners and repin any of their pins that may be of interest to you. Some of my favourite pinners are
Deborah Beau who's pins are just wonderful, I could happily repin every one of them
, Histoire de Mode who pins the most amazing vintage fashions,
Agnés Brun, who pins the weird and wonderful and the lovely
Pomme de Jour for fab retro pins.
I also see Pinterest as a way of showcasing who I am, what I like and what inspires me. My boards are very 'me'. You can see and follow my boards
here.
So, if I have inspired you to have a go and join in the Pinterest fun you can sign up
here.
A word of warning though, it's addictive!

Well how exciting is this?!!! I am nominated in the
National Vintage Awards, or rather my little shop is.
My website is in the Best Online Shop - Homewares section and I would be really, really grateful if you could
vote for me.
I have been running my business for some years now, alongside bringing up the children, and specialise in supplying good quality vintage yardage of fabrics. My customers range from hobbyists and crafters to Theatre production, fashion designers, galleries, TV and film companies and even the Olympics. I count Cath Kidston and Christina Strutt (Cabbages and Roses) in my customer base. All this I have built up from my home with no financial loans or backing
I am proud to say that I have built up a sound knowledge of vintage and antique fabrics and their designs and can offer a sourcing service too. My reputation has grown in those 10 years and I am often asked to write magazine articles about vintage fabrics. I have been mentioned in many books as a reputable supplier.
Being recognised for the specialist work that I do would be just wonderful so if you think I deserve to win in that category please tick the box.
Thank you x
Well the car is all loaded up and ready for the Talent for Textiles fair tomorrow. This is held at the Meeting House, Ilminster, Somerset. 9.30 am to 4pm.
Lots of lovely stallholders bringing the best fabrics, textiles, quilts, clothing and haberdashery items. The Meeting House also does the most delicious food and Ilminster town is great for a vintage rummage.
Here is a little taster of what I am bringing.
Hope to see you there x
Spring Bunting
28 Mar 2013 3:48 AM (12 years ago)

I have been having such fun using up some of my favourite fabrics in Spring colours.
I decided to make some pretty mini bunting to jolly up the dresser in my kitchen so that even if it is less than Spring-like outside I have the colours indoors!
I enjoyed making it so much and am having a little giveaway over on my
Facebook page. Pop over and enter and I will send out a
make-it-yourself bunting kit to one lucky person.
Spring Sale
22 Mar 2013 1:06 PM (12 years ago)

I have decided to have a Spring sale as we have so much stock

(as if by magic), here at Donna Flower HQ!
So for one week only there is 20% off all stock on my
website.
Just enter the code EASTER on checkout to benefit from this great discount.
Hop over to the
website to see what wonderful goodies are in store.
Happy Easter x
These last few weeks have been a bit of a struggle if I am honest. I haven't been in tip top condition healthwise, nothing serious just this nasty flu that seems to be doing the rounds and flooring everyone. It seems to go away for a while and then come back with a vengeance. Consequently work has taken a bit of a back seat, which in some ways has been nice as I spent a bit of time on creative projects, something I rarely get time for these days.
First of all I arranged a swap with lovely Annie of Annie Montgomerie Dolls. A very, very talented lady who seems to have no end of skills from sewing, cake decorating to animation and beyond. She has made me the most amazing full sized deer head, from a vintage Harrod's blanket no less. In return I was to crochet her a striped blanket from the beautiful cotton yarn I bought from Yvestown. Crochet is not on Annie's skills list although I suspect if she was shown how, she could do it and be brilliant at it!
He is magnificent isn't he?!!
Here is the blanket that I made for Annie in return. Hours of crochet and much love went into each and every stripe let me tell you (as well as a little bit of swearing when I realised I had messed it up a bit). I am not a brilliant crocheter and am completely self taught but I do enjoy it.
And here it is in her home with her Donna Wilson cushions and blanket. It's the Donna sofa!
After that I decided to have a break from stripes and have now started to crochet a giant granny square blanket using Rapido yarn again from
Yvestown. This is so lovely to work with and the colours are divine.
I am hoping to make this big enough to go on our King Sized bed but we will see. I may get bored.
I have managed to list some new fabrics on the
website. I have had some great finds since Christmas and keep getting offered huge collections of fabrics as people clear out relatives homes, more than I can cope with sometimes. Here is a little look at a few that have been listed recently.
I was delighted this month to have my very first article published in the wonderful
Pretty Nostalgic magazine (issue 6). I wrote about collecting vintage fabrics and the history behind some of them, era by era. It was accompanied by some really beautiful photos shot in a vintage style launderette, using fabrics that I sent them. I love it.
If you haven't seen this magazine before do check it out. It's wonderful, more like a book than a magazine, with very few ads and lots of gorgeous photos.
Finally, just to let you know, I have no fairs in March but my next one will be the brilliant
Talent for Textiles fair in Ilminster, Somerset on Wednesday 10th April. This is held at the Meeting House from 10 am to 4pm. Free entry.
Then the one after that will be the
Vintage Bazaar Spring Fair at the
Cheese and Grain in Frome, on Saturday 20th April from 9am to 3pm. Entry is £1.
I have masses of new and exciting goodies to bring along so hope to see you there.
Happy New Year everyone. I am not sure quite where the last part of 2012 or the beginning of 2013 went but here we are almost through January and I have not updated you on how things are for me.
I was so busy with fairs in December and then Christmas came and went in a blur. It was a bitter sweet one this year as my beautiful big girl was away in France doing a ski season. I did miss her and her sweet Christmas spirit as she missed us. Thank goodness for the internet for we spoke and saw each other several times that day.
She bought me the most beautiful present, a personally inscribed necklace from
Chambers and Beau with the sweetest words on, which made me cry of course! I am the luckiest Mummy.
Paul and I then went to the Vintage New Year's Eve party at the Southbank, which was fun.
Sadly my phone ran out of charge early in the evening so I took no photos at the event, only these few of us getting ready and walking across the bridge to the Royal Festival Hall exist.
2012 was a wonderful year, a sad little
loss of my darling Bella in Summer, but much to celebrate and be thankful for. It was the year I was the Homes and Antiques Magazine VIP for a month
It was the year that I supplied the Olympics with fabric for the Beach Volleyball dancers
My fabric was used for
George Clarke's caravan in Channel 4's programme
Amazing Spaces. The fabric was used for cushions and the blind in the sitting room.
I was given the most lovely accolade by the Queens of Granny Chic, Tif Fussel (
Dottie Angel) and Rachelle Blondel (
Ted and Agnes) in their beautiful book.
and another mention in the fabulous
Lola Nova's scrummy book
It is so lovely to get recognition from such talented and esteemed people as these. My little business is a real labour of love and a passion of mine and to be so successful fills me with absolute joy. I am hoping to build on last year's successes, learn from the mistakes and continue to grow this vintage fabric emporium of mine. It's already looking like a great year ahead.
I'm looking forward to it.
Here I am sitting in bed, trying to shake off a bug. I have no time for bugs right now, I am simply too busy, so I am ignoring it as best I can, whilst trying to do the right thing (take lots of Vitamin C, have early nights etc).
This Saturday is the last fair of the year for me. One of my favourites, the Vintage Bazaar, is having it's Christmas fair at the Cheese and Grain, Market Yard, Frome, Somerset BA11 1BE (from 9am to 3pm).
Frome is such a lovely town with a great vintage vibe and lots of nice shops and cafes which I really enjoy visiting. As well as my stall there are loads of great sellers making it a super event which is always very well attended.
Take a look at the Vintage Bazaar blog for more details and in the meantime I will go back to sipping my honey and lemon and getting my strength up! Hope to see you there.
Well it's that time of the year once again. I have 3 fairs to do this December, more than I have ever done before.
The first one is the famous Original Vintage and Handmade Fair in Chipping Sodbury, on Saturday 1st December. A lovely fair which has some of the very best vintage dealers and the most talented artists and makers from around the South West. The quality and variety of goods on offer is outstanding and our visitors often stay all day, sometimes doing several rounds of the hall before going home happy and laden with beautiful and original Christmas gifts.
Just check out the list of stallholders
If you are fed up with seeing the same old same old on the High Street and are stuck for ideas of what to buy your loved ones then this is a must for you. The town of Chipping Sodbury is lovely too with lots of great independent shops, charity shops, cafes and is the home of the Fabulous Baker Brother's bakery,
Hobbs House. Well worth popping into for bread, pies and cakes.
I have been gathering bits for my stall all year and have had lots of fun today putting them all together and making a mock-up of my stall.
I have wonderful handmade soaps, wrapped in vintage fabrics, a 2 in 1 present for the fabric lover!
I have been pinning beautiful vintage brooches onto vintage postcards to make them into lovely gifts.
and have also wound vintage ribbon onto vintage Christmas postcards
I have vintage ice skates, little vintage children's shoes, vintage Christmas boxes, toy soldiers
and of course there is loads and loads of fabric and a rail of gorgeous vintage clothes
From pinnies, tweeds, velvets and fake fur, natty knitwear, sparkly dresses and a selection of little black dresses, this is a wonderful and exciting collection of vintage fashion.
Lots of other lovely bits, blankets, quilts, books, boxes and baubles.
I hope to see some of you on Saturday, do come and say hello if visit.
Rag Rummage
26 Oct 2012 5:41 AM (13 years ago)
This week I have been getting ready for the Rag Rummage in Taunton tomorrow, organised by the lovely Liz Van Hasselt (aka Washerwoman).
It is a fabulous opportunity to purchase vintage and new textiles, trimmings, lace, buttons, linens, patterns and much more from West Country workrooms, collectors and dealers.
Doors open at 9.30 am and it finishes early at 2.30pm. The
address is Trull Memorial Hall, Church Road, Trull, Near Taunton TA3
7JZ. There is a tiny 50p admission charge.
Teas, coffees and cakes will be available.
For more details visit The Vintage Bazaar blog.
Here is a sneak preview of some of the stock I will be bringing along with me. Hope to see you there.

We are currently having a Barkcloth Bonanza event. Lots of new pieces of this beautiful fabric were uncovered from our stock room and have been added to the website this week.
I am often asked 'what is barkcloth?'.
Barkcloth is a soft, thick, slightly textured fabric, so named because it has a rough surface like that of tree bark. It is usually made of densely woven cotton fibers. It was once common in Asia, Africa, Indonesia, and the Pacific, coming primarily from trees of the Moraceae family and was made by beating sodden strips of the fibrous inner bark of these trees into sheets. It was very popular in the 1950's and 60's and is perfect for upholstery, cushions, curtains and lamp shades.
Folly and Glee are a company who specialise in making bespoke lampshades from barkcloth. Their lampshades are truly beautiful and they have made shades for Sanderson and most recently for Jamie Oliver's new mega restaurant, bakery and bar at Gatwick Airport.
So, I am excited to announce that we have collaborated to offer you a 30% discount on a bespoke lampshade made from fabric on my website. Polly's shades start at just £12 for a 20cm diameter table lamp. What a bargain!!!

Here are some examples of Folly and Glee's wonderful shades using barkcloth fabrics
or how about an inside-out shade with the fabric on the inside, as chosen by Jamie Oliver?
Polly has lots of different shapes of shades and can help you with any bespoke design you have.
Just to let you know also that I am doing 2 fairs this month.
The first one is next Wednesday 17th October. This is the wonderful Talent for Textiles fair at the Meeting House in Ilminster, Somerset. The next one will be The Rag and Remnant Rummage sale at Trull Memorial Hall near Taunton. Click on my 'Vintage Fairs' tab at the top of this page for more details. Hope to see some of you there.
Oh yes, it's that time again! The wonderful Textile and Fashion Fair is on this Saturday, 29th September, at the Old Town Hall, Chipping Sodbury, run by the Vintage and Handmade team.
I have been busy getting my stall ready, sorting out new stock, washing, ironing, pricing and packing it all away ready for the big day.
This fair is always popular as it offers some of the very best textiles and fashions from specialist dealers in the South West. The town of Chipping Sodbury is also a great venue, it has some lovely shops, cafes and the Hobbs House Bakery, home of the Fabulous Baker Brothers.
If you haven't been yet, you have been missing out and if you have, you will know how gorgeous an event this is.
Here is a little preview of the stock I will be bringing for you.
A Month of Change
20 Sep 2012 4:31 AM (13 years ago)
It has been exactly a month since my last post, a month since my little Bella left us. My heart is still heavy, and I think of her and miss her every day, but the pain has lessened. I want to thank each and every one of you who left kind words. I cannot tell you how comforting I found them. I often wonder if it would make a difference to say anything to people I don't know very well when I read sad posts. Now I know that it does. The kindness of strangers, as some of you are, was so appreciated. Every comment like a gentle stroke on my arm, a whisper that 'it will be ok'. So, Thank You lovely readers.
The end of Summer was a busy time for me, not busy with work as I shut the website for a few weeks, but busy with the important things, holidays and family life.
My Mum, the children and I visited Lyme Regis, a favourite place of ours, and stayed at a friend's house for a week. Lovely sunny days (and a few rainy ones) filled with sandcastle building, swimming in the sea, fish and chips, reading, mackerel fishing and treasure hunting in vintage shops.

We breakfasted in the wonderful
Town Mill Bakery. A perfect start to any day.
If you go to Lyme Regis do visit. Their Eccles cakes are second to none.
The day after we got back from there we flew off to Spain and our first family holiday in 7 years!
How lovely it was to fly off, with the full moon bright in the sky, to warmer climes. To spend hours in the pool, feeling the sun on my skin was just so healing and so needed. I am not going to leave it so long again.
So here we are, the end of Summer and looking towards Autumn. There is a real crispness in the air and the nights are drawing in, it is getting darker so much earlier these days.
I love this time of year. I adore knitwear and look forward to wearing my tights and boots. The fire will be lit soon and we will be cosying up.
I have added lots of new stock to the website. Treasures found on my travels and things tucked away in readiness for the new season. I have listed lots of beautiful
quilts and eiderdowns.
Lots of new fabrics have been added too, including some amazing 1940's French dress fabrics that I found still on the bolt. They would make the most amazing tea dresses and I have LOADS of it!
Lots of lovely new stock, all of which can be found
here.
Sadly, due to family commitments, I have had to cancel my stall at the
Vintage Bazaar being held this Saturday in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. If you get the opportunity do try and go. Lizzie and Clare, who organise the Bazaar, select the very best sellers to be at their events making them a not-to-be-missed fair. I'm only sorry I am not going!
However next Saturday (29th September) I will be stalling at the Original
Vintage and Handmade Autumn Vintage Fashion and Textile Fair. Another wonderfully organised fair by Jayne Soule and Michele Chivers, this is an event not to be missed. Two rooms of the finest sellers of vintage textiles in the beautiful town of Chipping Sodbury. This is truly a great day out for any vintage lover.
I have a huge amount of new stock, as you can see, as well as a rail full of vintage clothes to bring along. I do hope to see you there.
Last but not least, I am sure many of you enjoyed the Olympics this summer, I know I did. A few months before they were about to start I got a call from them asking for some vintage 1960's stretch fabric to make shorts for the dancers who entertained the crowds during 'time out' at the Beach Volleyball games.
I wonder if I should have 'Official Supplier to the 2012 Olympics' on my headed notepaper?
It was a very proud moment for me seeing these dancers in my fabrics.
Saying goodbye to a friend of 17 years is unbearable. That the friend was a 4-legged, furry moggy makes it no easier.
My beloved cat, Bella, my constant companion for the last 17 years died today, in my arms.
I held her while the vet did the kindest thing and released her from the obvious pain she was suffered.
It broke my heart.
My funny faced little girl was the sweetest cat I have ever met. We got her and her sister at the same time, from a lady my Mum met on holiday in Greece. We had wanted a cat for my little girl, then 5 years old, (she is now 22), but when we heard about the 2 on offer we couldn't possibly choose between them and so Bella and her sister Fifi came to live with us.
They couldn't have been more different. Fifi was brave, the leader, whilst Bella was a nervous, shy little thing. She quickly latched on to me and became 'Mummy's cat'. She was never far from my side.
2 years later my daughter and I were shopping in a garden centre/pet shop for pond plants and fell in love with a fluffy black kitten who came home with us and became part of our family.
Hebe was never accepted by Fifi who still hisses at him every time she sees him, some 15 years later, but Bella loved him.
A few weeks ago we found Hebe in our garden unable to walk or stand and so he was rushed to the vets. Tests were done, X-Rays taken and he spent a week on a drip, antibiotics and heart tablets until the vets told us that nothing more could be done without extensive tests which would run into thousands of pounds. We had visited him in the vets and each time he was purring and so happy to see us so we made the decision to bring him home and give him lots of TLC. I am a big believer in the power of love and I wanted him home.
For days he was so wobbly and to tell the truth I wasn't sure he would get through the first night. He was unable to walk more than a few steps. He would fall over all the time and be unable to get up and was a pitiful sight.
During this time Bella had been pining and had stopped eating. I think she missed him when he was away and was distressed to see him when he got back.
Hebe has now made such an amazing recovery and is walking, jumping and eating almost normally again.
Sadly Bella had declined very fast and because of her advanced years she became very poorly.
I will miss her more than words can say. Her almost constant presence in front of the Aga, her cuddles with me on the sofa when the children have gone to bed, her little 'meep' meow, her painful happy feet which she always did on us, forgetting to put her claws away! I will miss her sweet nature, the balance of having 3 cats, all so different in their ways. I have had her longer than 2 of my children.
RIP Bella, my sweet little girl.
Thank you to all of you who came to the Country House Vintage Fair at Castle Hill last Sunday. We were so lucky with the weather and with over 2,000 visitors through the door it was just as well that we had some of the best vintage dealers in the South West in attendance!
What a wonderful day.
Here are some pictures that I took whilst we were setting up.
There will be others later in the year and that is my last fair now until September, so I get to take the Summer off.
Do you remember
this?
The contents of the clearout were sold on ebay and I made enough money for a pair of these.
AND, they were in the sale!! Oh happy day.
