Basecamp Explorer Launches Year-Round Expeditions in Svalbard 17 Oct 12:21 PM (yesterday, 12:21 pm)

Norway’s Basecamp Explorer operates three small lodges across Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, offering access to one of the world’s most remote wilderness areas, where the environment is governed by polar light cycles, shifting ice and native wildlife.

New from Basecamp Explorer

The company has announced 10 expeditions for 2026, covering both summer and winter seasons. This new program represents a significant expansion in Arctic travel options, providing opportunities to explore Svalbard’s rugged landscapes, from dynamic ice formations to rare animal sightings.

Basecamp Explorer operates year-round, combining distinctive lodges with expedition-style accommodations and activities including snowmobiling, glacier kayaking and wildlife trekking. Sustainability is central to its approach, balancing exploration with conservation efforts to protect the delicate Arctic ecosystem while honoring the heritage of the island’s historic trappers.

The three lodges each offer unique experiences. Basecamp Hotel in Longyearbyen is open year-round with 16 rooms featuring trapper-style design and modern amenities, serving as the base for multi-day trips. Nordenskiold Lodge, open March-April and July-September, is the world’s northernmost commercial lodge, accessible only by boat or snowmobile. It has four rooms, no running water or electricity and is situated in a remote area inhabited only by seals, polar bears, ptarmigan and Arctic foxes. Isfjord Radio, open February through October, is a former radio station converted into a 22-room boutique hotel on the Arctic Ocean’s edge. Your clients can hike tundra, swim in Arctic waters and dine by fire while surrounded by polar bears, walruses and migratory seabirds.

Established in 1998 on Spitsbergen, the largest island in Svalbard, Basecamp Explorer’s first lodge was built using driftwood, tar paper and recycled materials, reflecting the trapper tradition. The company has since grown, creating destinations that immerse guests in the Arctic environment. Despite a history of coal mining and trapping, much of Spitsbergen remains pristine. Basecamp Explorer is committed to preserving this environment while offering sustainable Arctic experiences.

Spitsbergen offers different seasonal experiences. The winter season from February to May features activities such as snowmobiling, dog sledding and skiing, with opportunities to explore ice caves and spot wildlife like seals, Arctic foxes and reindeer. The summer season from June to September reveals snow-melted landscapes, glaciers and abundant seabirds, with activities including boating, kayaking, glacier hikes and dog sledding on wheels. The polar night from October to February brings continuous darkness, ideal for viewing the Northern Lights, with activities like dog sledding and hiking.

The 2026 expeditions include dog sledding journeys such as the 5-day Trapper’s Trail and the 8-day Telegraph Route, snowmobiling and dog sledding combinations and summer hiking and kayaking trips. The Isfjord Radio Music Festival takes place September 4-6, offering an Arctic music experience in the wilderness. Polar night adventures include a 4-day Northern Lights trip featuring dog sledding and ice cave hikes.

Spirit Plans Additional Job Cuts, Station Closures 17 Oct 8:10 AM (yesterday, 8:10 am)

Spirit Airlines has announced a major workforce overhaul as part of its ongoing restructuring effort to stay in the air.

The airline is trimming its team to match its shrinking fleet and reduced operational capacity as it charts a new course toward 2026.

A spokesperson confirmed plans to furlough up to 365 more pilots and downgrade 170 captains to first officers in the first quarter of 2026, though voluntary departures may reduce these numbers. Spirit has already furloughed nearly 800 pilots amid back-to-back bankruptcy filings.

Maintenance Station Closures
In addition, the low-cost airline is set to shutter its maintenance stations and warehouse operations in Baltimore and Chicago by the start of 2026.

Beyond these closures, Spirit plans to implement what they’re calling “volume-based staffing adjustments” across their remaining maintenance network, alongside trimming their corporate workforce. The number of desk jobs that will disappear hasn’t been revealed yet.

That said, Spirit Airlines has secured $475 million in financing from its existing bondholders to maintain ongoing operations. Of the total financing, $200 million is immediately available.

In a statement, Spirit says, it “continues to make progress with other lessors as it pursues its fleet optimization strategy.”

Spirit Airlines maintains a dedicated website about its restructuring process at spiritrestructuring.com.

Easier Access to Taipei Takes Off 16 Oct 10:00 AM (2 days ago)

With the newly expanded codeshare partnership between Alaska Airlines and STARLUX Airlines, a Taiwan-based boutique international airline, travelers can now reach Taipei from 20 U.S. cities on a single itinerary.

The expanded codeshare agreement added 12 new codeshare cities. Via Seattle: Minneapolis, Atlanta, Tampa, Anchorage, Raleigh-Durham, Orlando, Washington Dulles, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Spokane, and Boise; via San Francisco: Newark.

These cities join the original eight STARLUX–Alaska codeshare cities—Salt Lake City, San Diego, Phoenix, Portland, Las Vegas, Dallas, Denver and Austin—which have been operating since the end of 2024, and now connect via Seattle and San Francisco, reflecting STARLUX’s expanded U.S. gateway strategy.

The enhanced agreement offers U.S. travelers streamlined booking, coordinated check-in, and smooth transfers through Alaska’s domestic network and STARLUX’s international gateways in San Francisco and Seattle. Reservations are now open for booking.

“Alaska Airlines has always been an important partner for STARLUX,” stated STARLUX CEO Glenn Chai in a media statement. “This new chapter in our partnership not only strengthens our North American network, but also gives travelers more flexibility and efficiency when flying to Taipei and beyond. COSMILE members can now even redeem mileage on Alaska flights….”

Added Alex Judson, Managing Director of Partnerships & International at Alaska Airlines: “We’re excited to expand our collaboration with STARLUX to connect even more of our network to its long-haul service from Taipei. With seamless access through Seattle and San Francisco, this next phase strengthens our shared commitment to offering travelers more choice, convenience, and premium service across the Pacific.”

STARLUX currently operates 33 routes to 29 destinations, including a regional network in Asia and long-haul service to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Ontario, California. In addition to its expanded codeshare with Alaska Airlines, STARLUX also partners with American Airlines. With the launch of the Phoenix route on Jan. 15, 2026, passengers will gain access to American Airlines’ extensive domestic network to connect to more destinations across the Americas.

Carnival’s Mardi Gras Returns with Fresh Enhancements 16 Oct 9:18 AM (2 days ago)

Carnival’s Excel-class flagship, Mardi Gras, has officially returned to service following a dry dock in Marseilles, France. The ship, which carries up to 6,400 passengers, is now en route from Barcelona on a 15-day transatlantic voyage to its homeport in Port Canaveral, Florida, where it will resume year-round Caribbean itineraries.

Mardi Gras was a game-changer when she debuted as our first Excel-class ship, and now she’s setting the pace again as the first in her class to complete a dry dock,” said Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a media statement. “These updates not only enhance the onboard experience for families and groups but also signal the exciting direction we’re heading in with future fleet enhancements.”

New & Improved Madri Gras

The dry dock introduced several updates. Among the enhancements are 100 new connecting staterooms providing more flexibility for multigenerational travelers and larger parties. Carnival Adventures was reimagined with a streamlined layout to simplify the excursion booking process, while the casino was expanded with new slot machines and refreshed retail venues, including Tag Heuer, Breitling, Pandora and Swarovski.

Accessibility upgrades were also a major focus, with redesigned walkways and enhanced features in public areas and guest cabins.

Following its transatlantic voyage—with calls in Malaga and Cadiz (Seville), Spain; Tenerife, Canary Islands; and Carnival’s private destination, Celebration Key—Mardi Gras will continue sailing seven- to nine-day Caribbean itineraries from Port Canaveral. Looking ahead, the ship is set to become the first Excel-class vessel in the fleet to offer shorter four- and five-day Caribbean cruises beginning in 2027.
