I left my room in tights, ankle boots and a turtleneck to walk around Yong Kang street, on the look out for a delicious bowl of steaming hot beef noodles soup. Taipei quickly turned up the heat and I soon found myself hiding behind some trees quickly rolling down my tights and ended up trading the hot meal for a shaved mango ice from Smoothie House. Oh maan, how can I begin to explain the delicious goodness that this Taiwanese version of a “nieve” is. The mango flavoured ice is surrounded by fresh fruit and then topped off with a scoop of mango ice cream. A perfect mixture of sweet & sour, the countless brain freezes were totally worth it!

As for this dainty, vintage bag, it was a score from my new secret (not-so-secret anymore) shopping destination: Facebook trade-buy-sell groups! So far it’s making up for the lack of thrift stores in Taiwan. Not quite the same, but for now it shall do.

Salí de mi habitación en medias negras, botines y un top cuello de tortuga para caminar por la calle Yong Kang en busca de una sopa caliente de res con fideos. De repente, a Taipei se le ocurrió elevar la temperatura y pronto me encontraba escondida detrás de unos árboles, enrollando las medias para guardarlas en mi cartera. En lugar de una sopa hirviendo, terminé comprando un delicioso raspado de hielo sabor mango en Smoothie House. Uff, no tienen idea lo delicioso que es la versión Taiwanesa de una “nieve”. Hielo sabor a mango, cubierto de frutas frescas y con una bola de helado sabor mango encima. Es la combinación perfecta entre lo dulce y lo ácido, tanto que los múltiples congelamientos de cerebro que sufrí valieron la pena.

En cuanto a mi bolso vintage, fue uno de esos tesoros escondidos que encontré en mi nuevo destino para compras: grupos de venta en Facebook! Por ahora están llenando el vacío que ha dejado la falta de tiendas de ropa de segunda mano en Taiwán.

I found these Calvin Klein vintage flared jeans at a thrift shop, naturally, and though they have absolutely no “stretch” in them I was lucky that they fit! I had them hidden in my closet for a while since as I’ve said before I’m not the biggest fan of jeans, but the colder weather persuaded me to finally wear them. I’m glad I did, since I grew so fond of them! They were a little short on me (so strange!) but I unravelled the hem and now I can even wear them with heels.

As for the top, this is from our last Bultique collection that hasn’t been launched yet. As you might know, the online shop has been down for a while. I became really busy with a full time job, my business partner and friend Lutfi made the big move to New York and then I ended up coming to Taiwan. Bultique was our baby so it was hard to let it go, but let’s just say it’s a temporary pause. Lutfi and I plan on doing awesome things in the future, so stay tuned! Oh, and that last mini collection with tons of weird textures might be available soon. IT IS AMAZING.

Encontré estos pantalones de denim Calvin Klein en un tienda de ropa de segunda mano, naturalmente, y aunque no estiran en lo más mínimo tuve suerte que me quedaron. Los tuve escondidos en mi armario por bastante tiempo y como ya he dicho antes no soy gran fan de los jeans, pero el clima un poco frío me persuadió a sacudirlos y sacarlos a pasear. Me alegra mucho que lo hice, ya que rapidito les tomé cariño.  Me quedaban un poco cortos (milagro ya que soy super pequeña, jaja), pero solté el dobladillo y ahora hasta con tacones me los pongo.

En cuanto a la blusa, esta es de la última colección de Bultique que aún no ha sido lanzada. Como algunos saben, la tienda en línea ha estado abajo algún tiempo. Yo estaba bastante ocupada con un trabajo de tiempo completo, mi socio y amigo Lutfi se mudó para Nueva York y un tiempo después me vine para Taiwán. Bultique era como nuestro bebé así que fue bastante difícil dejarlo ir, pero digamos que es más como una pausa temporal. Lutfi y yo tenemos planes para el futuro, ¡así que estén pendientes! Y la última mini colección con miles de texturas extrañas probablemente esté disponible pronto. ESTÁ INCREÍBLE.

I found this pink bra at a convenience store in Taipei (not the fanciest place to buy undergarments), while shopping for laundry detergent and cotton swabs. I starred at it for too long, wondering if I could pull off wearing it as a crop top to get a point across. It was only about $5 so I figured I could test it out. I wore it under an open sweater and no, I didn’t quite pull it off. It’s very obviously a bra and got me stared at a lot, especially by older ladies. Would I try it out again? Perhaps. Maybe over a t-shirt or under a torn-up sweater.
I hope this doesn’t strike you as yet another trendy, disease awareness campaign post. I just thought I’d remind you (in a silly way) to check your boobies. It’s super easy and this month is especially a great time to do it since most hospitals and clinics have promotions and discounts. Are your boobs almost inexistent like mine? Still check ’em. Do you eat healthy and exercise regularly? Still check ’em. Are you a breast cancer survivor? I salute you! Have you lost someone you loved to breast cancer? My heart truly goes out to you, and I wish you strength this month and every month.

Encontré este sostén rosa en una tienda de conveniencia en Taipei (no el lugar más elegante para comprar ropa interior), mientras buscaba detergente e hisopos. Al verlo me preguntaba si podría usarlo como top y salirme con la mía transmitiendo un mensaje. Estaba a aprox. $5 entonces decidí asumir el reto y comprarlo. Lo usé bajo un suéter pero debo decir que no, no me salí con la mía. Creo que era bastante obvio lo que el “top” en realidad era y las ancianitas no dejaban de verme. ¿Será que lo usaré de nuevo? Posiblemente, quizás sobre una camiseta o bajo un suéter viejo.
Espero que esto no les parezca como un artículo más sobre esas campañas que se ponen de moda. Solo pensé recordarles de una manera graciosa, que revisen sus boobies. De veras que no es muy complicado hacerlo, en especial en este mes en que la mayoría de los hospitales tienen paquetes y descuentos especiales. ¿Tienen senos casi inexistentes como los míos? ¡Igual revísense! ¿Comen saludable y se ejercitan regularmente? ¡Igual revísense! Y a aquellos que han sobrevivido el cancer de senos, que están en la lucha, o que han perdido a alguien a tan terrible enfermedad, mi corazón está con ustedes tanto en este mes como en todos los demás.

This is a trick I’ve been using even before the Hilary Duff’s of the world wore skirts over bell-bottoms. My bum always finds a way to make my skirts sneakily climb up which has made for several embarrassing moments. It’s my fault for inclining towards the mini lengths, but sometimes, it’s not reeeally my fault. If you’re a bargain lover like I am, you know that not all shops let you try on their discounted clothing. That’s how I ended up with this 100 NTD (about $3.50) skirt from a market thinking it would be perfect to wear with a white button-up but instead, it turned out to be perfect for getting unwanted attention in the cheeks department. Rather than banning it from my closet, I decided to use at the perfect element to make old dresses new (you might recognise this vintage dress from a truly old post). And that’s how you turn a skirt from being R-rated to meet-the-boyfriend’s-parents potential.

Este es un truco que he usado desde antes que las Hilary Duff’s del mundo usaran faldas sobre sus pantalones campana. Mis pompas siempre encuentran la manera de hacer que mis faldas se encaramen a niveles indiscretos, haciéndome pasar muchos momentos de vergüeza. Es mi culpa por inclinarme hacia las minis, pero a veces de veras que no es mi culpa. Si te gustan las prendas en descuento como a mi, seguramente has de saber que no todas las tiendas te dejan probarte la mercadería en descuento. Así es como terminé con esta falda de 100 NTD (aprox. $3.50) que pensé sería perfecta para usar con una camisa blanca, pero que en realidad resultó ser perfecta para recibir atención no deseada en el departamento de, bueno, los cachetes. En lugar de olvidarme de la falda por completo, decidí utilizarla como el elemento perfecto para convertir vestidos viejos en vestidos nuevos (tal vez reconoces este vestido de un post viejo). Y así, señores y señoras, es como conviertes una falda no-apta-para-menores en una falda con potencial atuendo-para-conocer-a los-padres-del-novio.

Being the coastal girl that I am, I’m already mentally preparing for the colder weather approaching Taipei. As the temperature drops, so does my energy. But right now it’s just perfect: cool enough to wear a light jacket, warm enough for bare legs. I teamed up with my friend Jeyson García, one of the very few male fashion bloggers in Honduras, to come up with an incredibly easy outfit for the fall. I looked into his blog to see what he’s been wearing lately, and decided to follow his path in an almost all-black ensemble. Though I don’t generally gear towards jersey, this black body conscious dress really had me at hello the price, as it was found in the sales rack at NET. Tied a sweater (yes to texture) around my waist (yes to butt coverage) and paired it with my 60s inspired burgundy booties from ZARA and man, the most laid-back outfit ever. Also, there’s nothing a bold lip can’t dress up, right?

Jeyson and I have a special bond, especially since I was the first fashion blogger and he was the first male fashion blogger in our country. We go waaay back! Expect to see more collabs in the future! Remember to stop by his blog to see more photos of his outfit idea for fall.

Al ser una chica costeña, desde ya estoy preparándome mentalmente para el frío que se aproxima a Taipei. Las temperaturas bajas tienden a paralizarme, pero ahorita el clima está perfecto: lo suficientemente fresco como para usar chaquetas, pero lo suficientemente caliente como para poder andar las piernas al descubierto. Me he unido con mi amigo Jeyson García, uno de los pocos bloggers de moda para hombres en Honduras, para compartirles un atuendo para el otoño. Decidí visitar su blog para ver que ha estado vistiendo él últimamente, y decidí seguir su camino optando por un atuendo casi monocromático en negro. Generalmente no me inclino hacia piezas de tela jersey, pero este vestidito negro que encontré en la sección de ofertas de NET me convenció al tan solo verlo (y su precio). Amarré un suéter en mi cintura (perfecto para cubrir las pompas), y decidí ponerlo con unas botitas borgoña bien tipo 60s que encontré en ZARA. Resultó ser uno de los atuendos más cómodos que he usado en mucho tiempo. Además, ¡no hay nada que un labial rojo no pueda arreglar!

Jeyson y yo tenemos una conexión especial, ya que yo fui la primera blogger de moda y él el primero blogger de moda masculina en nuestro país. ¡Espera ver más colaboraciones como ésta en un futuro! Recuerda visitar su blog para ver más fotos del atuendo que el les propone para el otoño.

Ana became a comedian pretty much by accident. Her Youtube channel, Lipstickfables, was originally intended to be a beauty tutorial vlog. After uploading the infamous “S*** Hondurans Say” video on the same channel, she garnered thousands of followers and is now a national internet sensation. Adding another surprise to the mix, she recently earned her BA in Graphic Design and has found the way to put all her talents into a business venture: t-shirts with funny, Honduras related graphics. Can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! You can buy one of her Tees here, watch her hilarious videos on her Facebook or Instagram account, or her beauty tutorials on Youtube . Let me warn you though, despite being an incredibly sweet girl, she has a foul mouth and is not apologising for it. My favourites are her parodies of a typical Honduran mother through a fictitious character “la mamá de Carmen Suyapa”. SO. ON. POINT. Love you mom!

Ana se convirtió en comediante casi por accidente. Su canal de Youtube, Lipstickfables (Fábula de labiales), fue creado originalmente con el propósito de compartir tutoriales de belleza. Después de subir el ínfame video “S*** Hondurans Say”, Lipstickfables obtuvo miles de seguidores y ahora es considerada una sensación nacional de las redes sociales. Para agregar otra sorpresa a la mezcla, Ana recientemente obtuvo su título en Diseño Gráfico, y ha encontrado la manera de poner todos sus talentos para crear un negocio: camisetas con diseños graciosos relacionados a Honduras. Me pregunto, ¡¿que se le ocurrirá después?! Puedes comprar una de sus camisetas aquí , ver sus video en su página de Facebook o Instagram o ver sus tutoriales de belleza en su canal de Youtube. Pero déjenme avisarles, a pesar de que Ana es muy dulce, su vocabulario no lo es y ella no se está disculpando al respecto. Mis favoritos son sus parodias de una típica madre Hondureña a través del personaje ficticio “la mamá de Carmen Suyapa”. Son TAN al llegue. ¡Te amo mami!

What’s Next for TWF 22 Sep 2014 1:34 AM (11 years ago)

When I started Third World Fashionista about 7 years ago, I never imagined fashion blogging would one day turn into the phenomenon that it is. A public diary where I could vent out my woes and dreams, that’s what it was to me. I was a teenager living in a country where fashion did not go beyond matching bags and shoes and wearing whatever was acceptable according to clothing stores’ window displays, and on the Internet I found others who were as adventurous about clothes as I was. After losing access to my first blog, I was devastated and felt completely disconnected from the small community we were back then. Can you believe I was once on Susie Bubble’s blogroll?! I started TWF a second time but I’ve been confused this whole time about what direction it should take and if I should even continue to blog or not, hence the lack of posts. With the encouragement of some of the people that I love, I have decided to start over without losing focus of what blogging once meant to me: the opportunity to be a creative director, a fashion stylist and even a writer, no matter where I am or what my means are, and interact with people who feel the same way along the way.

With new beginnings come changes, and one of the biggest changes to come is…a name change! Those who have followed TWF from the beginning know that the words “third world” are nothing but a term of endearment on my book and despite occasional frustrations, I have nothing but love for my country. Though I have also chosen not to ignore it’s reality, Honduras has been my source of inspiration since day 1. It’s hard for me to have to defend my blog’s name before those who don’t know me well enough. I’m also aware of the origin of the term, so the rejection is understandable.

So yes, the big news is that Third World Fashionista will soon have a new name, a new design and is coming back with a bang! One thing that won’t change is it’s essence: inspiration from the unexpected, old clothes made new, DIYs, appreciation of talent, Hispanic culture, outfits without having to shell out the big bucks. So excited to share this new chapter with you all starting next week, so stay tuned!

Cuando comencé Third World Fashionista hace aproximadamente 7 años, jamás imaginé que un día los fashion blogs se convertirían en el fenómeno que son ahora. Para mi era solo un diario público donde podía desahogar mis penas y sueños. Yo era una adolescente viviendo en un país donde la moda no pasaba de combinar los zapatos con el bolso, y donde las tendencias eran dictadas por los escaparates de la única tienda por departamento, y en el Internet encontré a otros que compartían los mismos sentimientos con respecto a la moda. Después de perder acceso a mi primer blog, me decepcioné muchísimo y de pronto me sentí completamente desconectada de la pequeña comunidad que éramos en ese entonces. Pueden creer que el link a mi blogcito se encontraba en el blogroll de Susie Bubble?! Comencé TWF una segunda vez pero hasta este momento me he sentido algo confundida con respecto a la dirección que debería tomar y aún si siquiera debería continuar. Motivada por personas cercanas a mi, he decidido comenzar de nuevo sin perder el enfoque de lo que escribir aquí significa para mi: la oportunidad de ser directora creativa, fashion stylist y aún una escritora, sin importar adonde esté o cuales sean mis recursos, e interactuar con gente que comparte mis  sentimientos.

Con nuevos comienzos vienen cambios, y uno de los cambios más grandes será…¡un cambio de nombre! Aquellos que han seguido TWF desde el principio saben que el término “tercer mundo” no ha sido más que uno de cariño y que a pesar de las frustraciones ocasionales, yo no tengo más que amor por mi país. Aunque he escogido no esconder o ignorar su realidad, Honduras ha sido mi fuente de inspiración desde el primer día. Es triste para mi tener que defender el nombre de mi blog ante aquellos que no me conocen lo suficiente. Además, estoy al tanto del origen de tal término y creo que el rechazo que provoca es comprensible.

Entonces sí, la gran noticia es que TWF tendrá un nuevo nombre, nuevo diseño y regresa a lo grande. Una cosa que no cambiará es su esencia: inspiración en lo inesperado, ropa vieja convertida en nueva, tutoriales, reconocimiento del talento, la cultura Hispana, atuendos sin tener que quedar en la quiebra. Estoy emocionada por compartir este nuevo capítulo con todos ustedes a partir de la próxima semana así que, ¡estén pendientes!

My hair likes to behave like a big crybaby. If I bleach it, dye it or flat-iron it, it dries to the core and becomes untameable and frizzy. Add the extremely humid weather to the mix courtesy of Taipei and it doubles in size, not in the good way. Ohh, and the baby hairs. Those psycho-looking baby hairs will NOT stay in place. I looked up braid-obsessed soap opera actress (crying expert) Adela Noriega for some tress-control hair inspiration. I think this summer I won’t go a day without dem braids and my frizz control serum. Currently using Etude House Silk Scarf Repair Essence, does the job and smells good. Now…if only I could do my own cornrows. These pictures were shot during a touristy run to the INSANELY beautiful Chang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The heat had me all sticky and exhausted that day but it was totally worth it.

Anyway, big changes coming for the blog soon. Some you might like, some you might want to kill me for. I promise to warn you about them before hand. So exciting!

A mi cabello le encanta comportarse rebeldemente. Si lo plancho, pinto o aclaro, se resiente convirtiéndose en una bola incontrolable de frizz. Si a eso le agregamos el clima extremádamente húmedo, su tamaño se multiplica. Uff, y esos cabellos chiquitines que vienen creciendo…¡son el diablo! Para inspirarme un poco, busqué a la reina de las trenzas (y del llanto), la actríz de telenovelas Adela Noriega. Ahora no me suelto las trenzas de la frente ni salgo sin ponerme “gotas”, mi producto favorito para el frizz. Actualmente uso el Etude House Silk Scarf Serum, porque es Coreano, huele rico y hace bien su trabajo. Estas fotos las tomamos en el increíblemente bello Chang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. El calor me tenía cansada y pegajosa pero valió la pena.   

Aprovecho para contarles que se vienen grandes cambios para el blog, a algunos los amarán y otros seguramente les provocará ganas de ahorcarme pero les prometo dar un aviso previo. ¡Estoy muy emocionada!

Those of you who follow me on Instagram (@thirdworldfabi) probably already know this, but I’ve been in Taipei for about 2 months already! I left my job, sold my car and came here on a whim to study Mandarin Chinese. Though I’m still trying to figure out how to control my hair & skin in these extremely humid conditions, there’s too many good things in Taiwan to give it much attention. I won’t give it all up in one post, so this one is about the place I had to go to as soon as I set foot on this lovely island: a night market! DUH!

Aquellos que me siguen en Instagram (@thirdworldfabi) seguramente ya saben que estoy en Taipei desde hace casi 2 meses. Dejé mi trabajo, vendí mi carro y cuando menos acordé, estaba en Asia estudiando Mandarín. Todavía estoy tratando de controlar mi cabello y mi piel en esta humedad extrema, pero hay demasiadas cosas buenas en Taiwán como para prestarle mucha atención. En este post  les compartiré sobre el primer lugar donde pedí que me llevaran al llegar a Taipei: ¡un mercado!

Son escandalosos, coloridos, lleenos de gente…justo lo que me gusta. Las tiendas están saturadas de ropa barata (y no tan bonita), pero si tenés paciencia podés encontrar piezas increíbles en los percheros de ofertas a 100 NTD ($ 3.40 ó Lps. 72.00). Así es, ¡ropa NUEVA y bonita a menos de 4 dólares! El calor, el regateo y la cantidad exhorbitante de prendas puede intimidar a muchos, pero no a la experta en comprar en tiendas de bulto de ropa de segunda mano, ¡jaja! En un momento desde lejos vi una pila de ropa en descuento, y sin pensarlo dos veces me crucé el bolso, me arremangue las camiseta y me metí entre el mar de gente hacia el bulto en busca de tesoros. Estoy emocionada por compartirles mis compras, experiencias y comidas en los siguientes posts, así que estén muy pendientes. 

ATUENDO:  En Honduras, cuando fui a comprar esta falda a Zara, me enamoré de este par de zapatos color rosa. Estaban demasiado caros para mí, pero tuve la suerte de encontrarme con ellos de nuevo en Taiwán ¡a menos de la mitad del precio original! I’ve been asked several questions regarding TWF’s photography. As embarrassing as it may sound, not much has changed since I first started blogging years back. While the new generations are building teams that include professional make-up artists and photographers (smart!), I still have to beg my siblings to make time to take my photos. This is partly intentional to keep it real, and partly obligatory because I live far from where all the blogger action is happening. My “photoshoots” though tons of fun, are not very glamorous.

Here’s the lowdown on how it usually goes:

1.) My favorite place to shoot is at pulperías. A big plus if they have rusty gas containers piled out front. The color palettes are usually amazing!

2.) Lurkers are more than welcome. Who doesn’t enjoy a good photo-bomb?

3.) A not so secret, secret: When I have to walk unpaved streets to get to a location, I wear chancletas and put on my heels until I get to the spot.

4.) My camera is a Canon Rebel and I’ve upgraded my kit lens for the most affordable 50mm one, which does the trick.

5.) I use the same make-up pretty much every single day, except for the occasional bold lip, so I only touch up if I realize, after checking the first pictures, it didn’t look as good as I thought.

6.) The photographer is usually one of my siblings, so I admit we take tons of photos before getting decent ones (I’m not naturally photogenic).

7.) Aside from my very patient photographer, another one of my siblings probably tags along, pokes fun at my posing and tries to run me over with his bike (ahem, Ricardo).

8.) I’m lazy with photoshop, so I just use a free “vintage-y” filter action I downloaded long time ago, that happens to make me look paler than I actually am. Ya me han hecho preguntas sobre las fotografía de la página, y por eso comparto este post. Con un poco de vergüenza admito que no mucho ha cambiado desde que comencé el blog hace varios años. Las nuevas generaciones están armando sus equipos que incluyen maquillistas y fotógrafos profesionales (muy inteligente), mientras que yo ruego a mis hermanos que se tomen el tiempo de tomarme las fotitos! En parte es por mantener las cosas bien reales, y por otra parte porque vivo algo lejos de donde está sucediendo toda la acción en cuanto a blogs de moda se refiere. Mis sesiones de fotos, aunque son divertidas, no son muy glamorosas que se diga.

Aquí les comparto detalles al respecto:

1.) Mi lugar favorito para tomar las fotos es en pulperías o mercadillos, en especial si tienen chimbos de gas apilados afuera.La pintura descascarada que deja ver el óxido  =  paleta de colores increíble!

2.) Los curiosos que andan pasando son más que bienvenidos. A cada rato tienen apariciones especiales los photobombers por estos rumbos.

3.) Un secreto no tan secreto: si me toca caminar calles sin pavimentar para llegar al sitio, llevo unas chancletas para no dejar los dientes en la calle.

4.) La cámara que usamos es una Canon Rebel y el lente que uso actualmente es el más económico de los de 50mm.

5.) Mi maquillaje es casi el mismo todos. los. días. Si en las primeras fotos noto que el maquillaje está peor de lo que imaginaba, me retoco un poco con polvos, Chapstick, etc.

6.) El fotógrafo por lo general es uno de mis hermanos, así que tomamos mil fotos (no soy naturalmente fotogénica) antes de conseguir unas cuantas decentes.

7.) Además de mi muy paciente fotógrafo del día, casi siempre me acompaña otro de mis hermanos que se dedica a reír de mis poses o tratar de atropellarme con su bicicleta (ajemm, Ricardo).

8.) Soy súper perezosa con el photoshop, y por eso conseguí una acción de filtro estilo vintage que me hace ver “payula”, pero realmente me facilita la vida. Juego un poco con los ajustes y cheque, las fotos o pasan al blog o al cementerio de artículos que jamás vieron la luz del Internet.

Un tip extra para todos esos bloggers tercermundistas: para extra precaución, carguen su cámara en una bolsa de plástico menos llamativa a la hora de salir a tomar las fotos. No se ve bonito pero posiblemente se evite atención innecesaria.
