In the past year, Well Pets has been overloaded with requests from illegal online pharmacies. These pharmacies may sell medications that are counterfeit, outdated, mislabeled, incorrectly formulated, or are improperly made/stored. Some medicines may not contain the actual drug or may not have the correct directions for use.
Well Pets has a safe online pet pharmacy for our clients. Click here to go there now.
Recently one of our Well Pets clients ordered Revolution for her cats from an online website. The medication was shipped from Australia. When she received the medication she noticed that a sticker had been placed on the box to cover the words “for dogs”. When she called the pharmacy she was told there were absolutely no returns or refunds. They refused to send her the correct medication. The dog formulation when placed on a cat can cause serious health issues. Well Pets reports ALL false pharmacies to the FDA directly.
Here are some tips to avoid illegal pharmacies:
Ask your veterinarian if they have heard of the pharmacy that you are ordering from. See if they trust it or if any other clients have ordered from the same site.
Be careful:
Every pharmacy must have accreditation from Federal and State licensing and inspection board and prove that they have met all requirements. They must meet many requirements including protecting client confidentiality, strict quality assurance, and making sure prescription orders are valid by contacting the prescribing veterinarian.
If your pet has a problem with a medicine purchased online (for example a reaction to the medicine or the medicine is not working), first contact the medicine’s maker. To report problems directly to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) call 1-888-FDA-VETS. You can also report online on the FDA website www.fda.gov.
Education is the best defense you have against illegal online pet pharmacies. For more information about purchasing pet medicines, visit CVM’s website at www.fda.gov/animalveterinary or call 1-240-276-9300

Well Pets is now offering Spays, Neuters, Declaws, and Dental surgeries at a discounted rate! We offer these services on a limited basis every 4-6 weeks. Spay and neuter pricing for dogs is dependent on the weight of the animal. We only have a limited amount of spots for each surgery date. We require that your pet’s vaccinations are current and that the pet is healthy. We recommend spaying and neutering your pet starting at 4 months of age and pre-anesthetic bloodwork for any pet having surgery. There is a $25 deposit required that will go toward the cost of your surgery provided you do not cancel the appointment. For more information such as surgery dates and pricing or to reserve a surgery appointment please contact our office at 317-773-8387.

Canine Influenza is a highly contagious virus that can lead to sudden severe respiratory illness and can be fatal. Dogs who are regularly boarded, groomed, go to doggie daycares or to bark parks are all at greater risk. We recommend that all such dogs be vaccinated for Canine Influenza as well as the more routine Kennel Cough (Bordetella) vaccine. Please ask any of the doctors at our clinics if your dog should receive the Canine Influenza vaccine.

In the past 6 months, central Indianapolis veterinarians have been seeing an increased amount animals with Leptospirosis and Lyme diseases. These diseases were previously considered less common in Indiana, but we are suddenly seeing a larger number of animals coming in with these diseases. Lyme disease is spread by tick bites. Leptospirosis is spread through the urine of wild animals such as raccoons and opossums. Rabies was previously a disease unseen in Indiana for years, but multiple bats in Indiana counties around the area have tested positive as recently as March 2012. It is very important to vaccinate your dogs against these contageous and potentially fatal diseases. Lyme and Leptospirosis can be contracted by humans and can cause severe disease and can potentially lead to death. Rabies is fatal if contracted by humans and there is no cure. Please contact our office or visit one of our clinics to find out more on these diseases and to get your pet(s) protected against them.
