Hi, Lack of neutral should cause 240V at  l1 to N if l1 to N is an open circuit and n to L2 is a very high rersistance. L2 to n should then read 0V because of no current drawn.

Well, it didn't explode, but it definitely sounded like it. The past few weeks, our washer (Maytag MHWE400WW01) has been making a clanking noise during the spin cycle, like there was a marble or so.....
